Gran Turismo 5 review round-up

Gran Turismo 5

After years of waiting, it’s actually here. You can physically go into a games retailer, buy a copy of Gran Turismo 5 then go home and play it. Of course before going out to buy it, you may want to check out where you can pick up Gran Turismo 5 for the cheapest price.

If you needed further proof that the much delayed Gran Turismo 5 has finally been released, then you can read a variety of reviews across the gaming media. Alternatively, you can save yourself some time by reading this Gran Turismo 5 review round up. The good news that fans who have been waiting all these years is that reviews of Gran Turismo 5 are positive with a Metacritic average of 86 (At the time of writing)

Destructoid give Gran Turismo 5 a perfect 10 and have high praise for the game:

“Just as with a great car, Gran Turismo 5 feels so great that it begs to be driven. You can’t put it down. I found myself cruising the 8.5 miles of Circuit de la Sarthe this week just to enjoy the drive. When you get in the zone and really get in tune with the controls, this game really does let you tap into the pleasures of driving and racing. I’d like to imagine that Polyphony Digital has spent all this time fine-tuning this game for this very feeling.”

Eurogamer give Gran Turismo 5 a 9/10. They say the online mode isn’t as good as it can be, but that this is made up for by the rest of the game:

“Dreamed up five years ago and served up yesterday, it’s an off-kilter vision of the future, a cumbersome game with odd priorities, certainly. But it’s equally a game that heads off in unexpected and exciting directions, makes a few notable improvements, and overflows with love – for cars, for games technology and for its own mad pursuit. It’s good that Gran Turismo’s been away so long, because it’s all the better to have it back.”

Gran Turismo 5 gets an 8.5/10 from IGN, praising the games racing elements but claiming that away from the track the game isn’ quite up to scratch:

“Gran Turismo 5 is a 10/10 simulator wrapped up in a 5/10 game – driving is as exhilarating as anything that’s gone before, and slavish obsession with the minutiae of many of its cars ensure it’s an encyclopaedia of automotive delights. Its brilliance on the track, however is matched by its sloppiness off of it, and there’s a lack of polish that would at one time have seemed sacrilegious to the series. Ultimately its driving wins out to ensure that it’s still a great game, but it leaves that nagging doubt; this could have been a masterpiece were it not for the fact that Polyphony was so absorbed with the detail that it took its eye off the ball.”

CVG gives Gran Turismo 5 an 8/10, praising how realistic the cars feel to drive:

“Ultimately, Gran Turismo 5 has improved in the most important area, how the cars feel. Pounding the tarmac at the Nurburgring is even more satisfying knowing that the car is behaving as a real car would. It’s the biggest racing game around, so you certainly won’t be short of things to do once you get locked into building a serious car collection.”

However, their review ends by saying that after so long in development, Gran Turismo 5 does come with a slight sense of disappointment. Still, 8/10 is a very good score.

The high review scores suggest that Gran Turismo 5 will indeed be one of the biggest games of the year. ShopTo Marketing Manager Philip Driver claimed that Gran Turismo 5 will be the biggest selling PlayStation 3 game of the year, could this be true?

So Train2Game, have you been playing Gran Turismo 5? If so what do you think of it? Has it been worth the long wait?

Gran Turismo 5 – Where can you get it for the cheapest price?

Gran Turismo 5

Gran Turismo 5 is finally released tomorrow and various retailers will be selling the much anticipated –  and of course much delayed – racing sim at a knock down price.

HMV still has the most tempting offer, giving you the opportunity to buy Gran Turismo 5 for just £4.99 when you trade in F1 2010. But if you want to get Gran Turismo 5 for under a fiver you’ll have to be quick as HMV are only running the offer until Friday.

You can part with even less cash if you choose to buy Gran Turismo 5 from Blockbuster. It’s available for just 99p if you trade in two games from a list of chart titles including Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II, F1 2010 and Call of Duty: Black Ops.

The best no strings attached deal comes from Best Buy who are offering Gran Turismo 5 for just £29.99. However, there are only six Best Buy stores in the UK so unless you live near one, you’ll have to order Gran Turismo 5 online then wait a few days before you can play it.

Online retailer Shop.To are offering Gran Turismo 5 for the very reasonable price of £34.85 and say that it’ll be dispatched within five minutes of being ordered.  Shop. To Marketing Manager Philip Driver recently stated that Gran Turismo 5 will be the ‘biggest selling PlayStation 3 game of the year.’

Meanwhile, back on the High Street, Tesco are offering Gran Turismo 5 for £35.90, while Sainsbury’s have it priced at £39.99. Specialist retailers GAME and GameStation both also list Gran Turismo 5 for £39.99 and some stores will be hosting midnight launches.  You can find out if a store near you will be opening tonight for the launch of Gran Turismo 5 on the GAME and GameStation websites. The doors will open at 11:45 with Gran Turismo going on sale at 00:01.

Gran Turismo 5 is the third midnight game launch of the month, with Call of Duty: Black Ops and Kinect having previously caused games retailers to open their doors in the dead of night. Blizzard has also announced that there will also be a midnight launch for World of Warcraft: Cataclysm when the MMO is released on December 7th.

So Train2Game, will you be buying Gran Turismo 5 tomorrow? Will you be queuing up tonight to get your hands on it? Can you actually believe that after all the delays, that one of the PlayStation 3’s biggest exclusives is finally being released? Do you think Gran Turismo 5 could knock Call of Duty: Black Ops from the top of the charts?

Get Gran Turismo 5 for £4.99 (And see the Kevin Butler commercial!)

Gran Turismo 5

With the release of the much anticipated Gran Turismo 5 fast approaching, it looks like that we’ll have another retailer price war on our hands.

HMV have once again played their cards first and will be selling Gran Turismo 5 for just £4.99, thought with conditions of course. This offer will be available to anyone who buys Gran Turismo 5 from HMV and is happy to trade in a copy of F1 2010 for the PlayStation 3.  The deal runs from when Gran Turismo 5 is released on Wednesday November 24th through to Friday November 26th.

The HMV F1 2010 for Gran Turismo 5 trade in deal is very similar to one the retailer ran earlier this month for Call of Duty: Black Ops. It was possible to pick up Call of Duty: Black Ops for only £7.99 if you traded in a copy of Medal of Honor. The different retailers were keen to encourage consumers to buy Call of Duty: Black Ops from them with various different deals.

With Gran Turismo 5 being so highly anticipated – it has been tipped to be the highest selling PlayStation 3 game of the year – it’s entirely possible that retailers will once again provide special offers to encourage sales.

In other Gran Turismo 5 news, Sony have released a brand new advert for Gran Turismo 5 starring the one and only Kevin Butler. It’ll only feature on televisions in America, but thanks to the wonders of the internet you can watch it online right here, courtesy of the Official PlayStation Youtube channel.

Remember, Mr Butler is a professional driver on a closed circuit. Don’t attempt to imitate what he does!

Gran Turismo 5 is released exclusively for the PlayStation 3 less than one week on November 24th.

So Train2Game, how excited are you about the imminent release of Gran Turismo 5. Do you think you’ll take advantage of the HMV F1 2010 trade in deal? And of course, what are your thoughts about Kevin Butler’s Gran Turismo 5 commercial?

You can tell us what you think about Gran Turismo 5, the F1 2010 trade in deal or the Kevin Butler commercial here on the Train2Game blog, or over on the Train2Game forum.

Sony: PlayStation Move ‘Has greatly exceeded expectations’

PlayStation 3 PlayStation Move

The PlayStation Move controller is selling strongly and exceeding expectations, say Sony.

In an interview with Industry Gamers, GM of Latin America for SCEA Mark Stanley said that the PlayStation Move has been a ‘tremendous success’

“We’re actually continuing to catch up on filling the pipeline with product, as we are in the U.S. and worldwide because demand has greatly exceeded our expectations,” he said

“So far, we still don’t have enough to supply the [Latin America] region and we’re hoping to catch up, so triple-A success for us in the region. It’s been able to translate easily into the region.”

“Something as simple as Move is easily communicated, easily captivated by the region. The difference is we’ve been able very much to define the difference between Move and Wii and Kinect, which has helped us quite a bit.”

In October, Sony said that 2.5 million PlayStation Moves had been sold worldwide, with 1.5 million in Europe and 1 million in the USA.

The success of PlayStation Move is good news for Sony, especially given that the last few weeks have been dominated by the launch of Kinect for the Xbox 360. Microsoft have their eye on selling five million of the devices by Christmas. Sony will also hope that the release of ‘hardcore’ PlayStation Move games including Killzone 3 and LittleBigPlanet 2 will help the motion controller continue to be successful.

Perhaps the PlayStation Move would be more successful in the UK if we got the Kevin Butler adverts?

So Train2Game, do you own a PlayStation Move controller? Is it still interesting, or do you need some more games for it? And ultimately, do you think it’ll be Kinect or Move that wins the battle of the motion controllers?

Gran Turismo 5 ‘will be the biggest selling PS3 game of the year’

Gran Turismo 5

Gran Turismo 5 will be the biggest selling PlayStation 3 game of the year. That’s according to online retailer ShopTo.net who say sales of Gran Turismo 5 have risen significantly since it was revealed the game will finally be released on November 24th.

“We’ve never seen anything like this before,” said ShopTo Marketing Manager Philip Driver.

“As soon as the new release date was announced the sales just went through the roof. This is a game that most PS3 owners have been waiting a long time for.”

“Luckily we have prepared well and will be able to get GT5 to everyone that orders for release day.”

Gran Turismo 5 was supposed to be release on November 3rd, but was delayed once again in October in order to make it the ‘perfect’ experience. Some suggested that we’d fail to see Gran Turismo 5 this year, but earlier this month creator Kazunori Yamauchi said the discs were being stamped, while Sony assured the waiting public that the game would be out before Christmas.

Gran Turismo 5 will feature over 1000 cars, and 20 tracks – including the Top Gear test track.  Yamauchi is confident that fans will be satisified with Gran Turismo 5 despite the long, long wait:

“Our objective with GT5 was to create another great revolution which would not only satisfy our own high expectations, but would meet or even exceed the anticipation of the fans.”

Gran Turismo 5 is set for release in less than two weeks time on November 24th.

So Train2Game, do you think Gran Turismo 5 will really be the biggest selling PlayStation 3 game of the year? Can the racer out do the sales of Call of Duty: Black Ops on the PlayStation 3? Do you think it’ll be able to claim top spot in the video game chart?

Kinect launched in the UK

Microsoft Kinect

Kinect for the Xbox 360 is now available in the UK, following a big Microsoft launch event at the Natural History Museum.  The star studded gathering was fronted by singer Leona Lewis and popular beat combo The Wanted. (If you can tell us who the latter actually are, it’d be much appreciated.)

Attendees at the Natural History Museum got to have fun ice skating, and of course, they got to play games using Kinect, the new hands free motion controller for the Xbox 360.

Meanwhile, thousands of people queued up outside games retailers across the country to be among the first to buy Kinect.. It marked the second midnight launch in as many days, with Call of Duty: Black Ops having launched at the same time on the previous night.

Microsoft have been quick to hail the success of Kinect, with Kinect product boss Kudo Tsunoda claiming the release of the peripheral has been bigger than the launch of the Xbox 360.

“This is as big a launch as any console launch we’ve ever done,” said Tsunoda.

“And the amount of events, the amount of people, pre-orders… all coming down for Kinect; it’s the biggest thing than Xbox has ever done.”

The Kinect product boss also told CVG that Kinect will evolve much like Xbox Live has.

“We look at Kinect in a lot of the same way we look at Xbox Live,” he said. “Xbox Live obviously looks a lot different today than it did when it was first released and I think that’s the same approach that we take with Kinect.”

He said Microsoft will “constantly be building new innovative experiences, new features and new things for people to do all with the same hardware”.

Tsunoda also added: “We’ve got lots of great stuff available at launch. You can see what we’re doing with the games, the great voice stuff with movies and Sky – but I do think it’s going to be the kind of thing we’re going to continue to build on and continue to deliver new features, so that anyone who buys the Kinect sensor now will be able to get all those types of fun things to do over time as we deliver new types of platform features.”

The comments from Tsunoda echo previous remarks made by Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President in Charge of Microsoft Game Studios, Phil Spencer who told GameSpot that Kinect is as core to the Xbox 360 as Xbox Live.

To some, the launch success of Kinect for the Xbox 360 won’t come as a surprise, with Microsoft reportedly having half a billion to spend on marketing the new device. The hype seems to have worked with retailers apparently suffering from Kinect shortages.  Stephen McGill, boss of the Xbox business in the UK, told CVG:

Lots of the retailers closed their pre-orders a good few weeks ago for launch night allocations and obviously the responsibility for us now is just to keep on replenishing that stock.”

“We’re manufacturing 24 hours a day, seven days a week – lots of planes, boats and trucks are planned and lined up ready to get regular replenishment stock out there. I think a lot of people are going to be enjoying this for Christmas this year.”

Microsoft are definitely confident about Kinect for the Xbox 360, however, analysts suggest that it’ll be the PlayStation 3 that wins the console war this Christmas.

So Train2Game, have you got your hands on….or not on as the case would be…Kinect yet? If so, what do you think about the new peripheral? Is it worth the hype? Or have you found the Kinect experience to be somewhat underwhelming?

And ultimately, do you think it’ll be Microsoft or Sony that comes out on top this Christmas?

Gran Turismo 5 set for Pre-Christmas release say Sony

Gran Turismo 5

A Sony executive has reiterated that Gran Turismo 5 should finally be released before Christmas – and Christmas of this year too. When asked by Siliconera if Gran Turismo 5 was still on track for this year, SCE Senior Vice President of Marketing Peter Dille said:

“Yeah, Kazunori came out with a comment that they are working on a few last things. He apologized to the community, but explained it is coming before Christmas. We haven’t put a date to that yet, but we will just as soon as we get word from him when he’s done.”

He went on to confirm that this meant Gran Turismo 5 would be available in both Japan and America before Christmas.  Europe wasn’t mentioned but it’s likely that Dille was referring to a worldwide release of Gran Turismo 5.

In other Gran Turismo 5 release related news, Sony may have actually revealed the release date.  SonyStyle.com – an online store for Sony products – says that Gran Turismo 5 is set for release “on or about 11/30/2010” So while the date isn’t exactly nailed down, we may have an idea about when we’ll finally be able to get our hands on Gran Turismo 5.

Earlier in the week, Gran Turismo 5 creator Kazunori Yamauchi said the discs are being stamped as week speak” Gran Turismo  5was originally supposed to be released this week, before being delayed.

So Train2Game, are you starting to get more convinced that Gran Turismo 5 will be released this year? Are you going to make sure November 30th is free to play it?

Shoot ANYTHING from the LittleBigPlanet 2 Creatinator

LittleBigPlanet 2

A new LittleBigPlanet 2 trailer has revealed yet another awesome new feature in Media Molecule’s upcoming title… the Creatinator. The Creatinator may look like Sackboy is wearing a television camera on his head, but it’ll allow LittleBigPlanet players to spawn or shoot any item they want.

Tools, weapons, anything, and as the LittleBigPlanet 2 Creatinator trailer says ‘If you can make it, you can launch it’ You can check out the LittleBigPlanet 2 Creatinator trailer below:

The Creatinator is yet another new feature that will allow LittleBigPlanet 2 players to be as creative as they can imagine. It’s yet another example of why LittleBigPlanet 2 should be on any Train2Game students’ wish list.

The LittleBigPlanet 2 beta has already proved that community designers can be extremely creative, with a recreation of Street Fighter and a LittleBigPlanet First Person Shooter, a user created version of beautiful indie game Flower, and perhaps most impressively, a reimagining of Portal complete with Portal Gun, all appearing online.

The latest awesome level to appear online is a re-make of old school classic flying shooter Dogfight, made using LittleBigPlanet 2’s creation tools. You can see it below.

LittleBigPlanet 2 is scheduled for release on the PlayStation 3 on 18th January, as revealed at the end of this trailer. With Media Molecule having hired community designers, its definitely something that Train2Game students should be looking to invest in!

So Train2Game, what are your thoughts on the latest new LittleBigPlanet 2 feature? Do you think The Creatinator will be an exciting tool? What mad things would you fire out of it? And how impressive is that LittleBigPlanet 2 Dogfight video?

As usual, you can leave your thoughts on the latest addition to LittleBigPlanet 2 here on the Train2Game blog, or on the Train2Game forum.

Gran Turismo 5 discs are “being stamped” now!

Development of Gran Turismo 5 is actually complete!  Yes, after all those years of delays it’s hard to believe, but it actually sounds like that Gran Turismo 5 will we with us in the near future. Gran Turismo 5 is actually being put onto discs, right now!

How do we know this is actually happening? Speaking to Jalopnik, Gran Turismo 5 creator Kazunori Yamauchi said: “The discs are being stamped as we speak” The above picture is actually  the Gran Turismo 5 boss making a disc pressing motion with his hands when answering a question about a release date.

However, Yamauchi stopped short of revealing an actual release date for the game. Gran Turismo 5 was actually supposed to be launched on November 2nd, but it was delayed last month with ‘creating the perfect racing experience’ cited as the main reason.

The question is now, when will Gran Turismo 5 be released? Will it make it to retail before Christmas? Or will Gran Turismo not see the light of day until 2011? It seems that no one outside of Sony truly knows.  ShopTo and Zavvi both say Gran Turismo 5 will be released on 3rd December, while GAME list its release as 2011.

The news of Gran Turismo 5 discs being pressed comes hours after an industry source told Eurogamer that there is “not much hope” of the game being released this year. The games press is now frantically trying to pin down a release date for Gran Turismo 5, and we’ll let you know when the news is revealed!

When it finally gets released, Gran Turismo 5 will feature over 1,000 fully licensed cars and over 70 racing circuits – including the Top Gear  test track. The much anticipated, and much delayed, racer will also be fully 3D compatible.  There’s also the possibility of DLC being added to Gran Turismo 5 at a later date, with Polyphony boss Kazunori Yamauchi hinting that this could include motorbikes.

So Train2Game, do you actually believe that Gran Turismo 5 is being prepared for retail as we speak? Do you think it’ll be released before Christmas, or will Gran Turismo 5 not be available until next year? Will you be buying it? And do you think it’ll live up to the hype?

LittleBigPlanet 2 Sackbot featurette reveals release date

LittleBigPlanet 2

Media Molecule has released a new LittleBigPlanet 2 trailer. It not only showcases the new Sackbots, but also reveals the new release date of LittleBigPlanet 2.

The LittleBigPlanet 2 Sackbots video begins with a scientist Sackboy bringing a Sackbot to life in the style of an old school horror movie, and using the in-game creation tool to choose its size. The LittleBigPlanet 2 Sackbots aren’t just going to be limited to lifeless robots though, with the video showing how the bots can look like regular Sackboys and girls.

The Sackbot featurette also shows how the little blighters could be used in LittleBigPlanet 2 custom levels. Sackbots can be programmed to be rescued, to run from Sackboy, to follow Sackboy, to patrol areas, and to act in cut scenes. Of course, they can dance too, and the LittleBigPlanet 2 featurette shows plenty of that in a Bollywood style ending!

You can see the LittleBigPlanet 2 Sackbots featurette for yourself below.

As the video reveals, LittleBigPlanet 2 is now set to be released on January 18th 2011 after being delayed in September. It’s a date that should be firmly penned in to Train2Game student diaries given the scope available for creating community levels. Portal, Flower and Street Fighter have all been recreated by LittleBigPlanet 2 beta testers, and Train2Game students no doubt have some ideas of their own.

Last week, Media Molecule told Develop that they’ve hired developers after being impressed by their custom LittleBigPlanet levels. If that isn’t an incentive for Train2Game students to invest in LittleBigPlanet 2, I don’t know what is!

So Train2Game, what are your thoughts on the LittleBigPlanet 2 Sackbots featurette? How would you implement them into your LittleBigPlanet 2 level? Will you pick up LittleBigPlanet 2 in January?

You can leave your thoughts on LittleBigPlanet 2 here on the Train2Game blog, or on the Train2Game forum.
