Train2Game News 2D Animation Engine

Midas Touch Interactive, a groundbreaking physics based animation and VR/AR interaction technology studio, today released its latest product, Midas Creature – a Directable Automated Animation Engine and workflow for quickly and easily creating complex 2D animations for video games and other creative applications.

As part of the product rollout, the company is also launching a new website that contains product information along with a purchasing shop.

Midas Creature was developed by Jiayi Chong, a former Technical Director at Pixar Animation Studios whose experience includes working on many feature films, including Toy Story 3, Wall-E, UP, Brave, and Monsters University. Chong’s role at Pixar spanned ten years and involved developing physics simulation tools and engines, including simulations for rigid body dynamics, deformable solids, cloth, hair, fluid dynamics, and skin simulation tools. In his role as Technical Director of Animation for Midas Touch, Chong leads his team on creating cutting-edge animation pipeline and service, such as Midas Creature, that is made available to both internal projects as well as licensing partners.

“Midas Creature is the ideal pipeline for game developers and anyone else looking for a more powerful, efficient, and easy-to-use 2D animation process,” said Kevin He, CEO of Midas Touch Interactive. “The Directable Automated Animation Engine of Midas Creature allows you to create animations you might have previously thought impossible with key frame or flash animation. This includes motion like hair and cloth fluttering in the wind, as well as 3D-to-2D Mocap transfer.”

Video game developers and others can use Midas Creature’s powerful Skeletal Rigging and Animation tools to build, pose, warp, and bring their art to life. These tools are made to streamline the user’s workflow, reducing time and money spent while maintaining high-quality results.

“We’re very excited to have Jiayi on our team as he brings tremendous passion and expertise,” continued He, “which he utilizes to build and implement our next-gen AI driven physics based animation pipeline helping to further establish Midas Touch Interactive as a burgeoning immersive entertainment technology expert developing cost effective and deeply interactive content creation services.”

Midas Creature caters to 2D developers of all sizes with its “Creature Enterprise” and “Creature Indie” levels. Enterprise is a premium offering that gives users everything they need to get started using Creature for their company and projects. This is the full-featured version of the tool and gives users a license for Sprite Bump, a normal mapping tool that gives 3D lighting effects to 2D images. Unlimited support tickets are included in the Enterprise package. And for first-year Enterprise customers, a Creature Lead Engineer will offer one hour a month of feedback on their projects. “Creature Enterprise” is offered as a subscription, renewed annually.

Indie is designed for small-scale development teams who prefer more flexibility without an annual commitment, while still offering product complete features and support for indie teams to realize their animation needs. The “Creature Indie” license is available to those with less than $100,000 in gross revenues in the current year, and can be purchased for $19.99 per seat for a 30-day license and to be renewed month-by-month. Committed to inspiring young and aspiring creative developers, Midas Touch is also offering students a version of Midas Creature that allows them (with proof of enrollment/student ID) to use the tool free for one month.

Midas Creature is a blend of traditional tools and new technologies. Both premium levels will have comprehensive customer support to aid user needs.  Early adopters have used Midas Creature and seen positive benefits, including a 10x increase in speed of art pipeline performance (source PlayStudios).

Train2Game News National Videogame Foundation on videogame curation

The National Videogame Foundation continues its work with Bath Spa University, developing strategies for videogame curation and exhibition, surveying international work and publishing a new White Paper detailing their findings and recommendations.
While the economic and cultural value of videogames to the U.K. and global creative sectors is widely recognised, the long-term sustainability of games heritage is under threat. Unless we act now, future generations will lose access to their cultural heritage and the next generation of UK developers will be robbed of historical reference material.

A number of museums, galleries and grassroots projects around the world have dedicated themselves to preserving, curating and exhibiting videogames. At the forefront of this are the UK’s National Videogame Arcade, The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, NY, the Computerpielemuseum in Berlin and Ritsumeikan University in Kyoto, Japan.

However, this activity is not co-ordinated at a national or international level.

Supported by the British Academy and Leverhulme Trust, this year, Iain Simons (National Videogame Foundation) and Professor James Newman (Bath Spa University) will travel to Japan, the USA and Germany to survey colleagues’ work, share practise from the National Videogame Arcade and publish a White Paper sharing their findings and recommendations.

Iain Simons, CEO of the National Videogame Foundation commented:

‘The National Videogame Foundation, with the support of its guests and patrons, is already taking the lead in showcasing and interpreting videogames in the UK through the National Videogame Arcade. I’m excited to be able to share our experiences of videogame curation with colleagues across the world. We need to learn from each other and work out the where the gaps in coverage currently are. By looking at how different organisations are tackling curation, access and exhibition, the NVA is going to take a leading role in co-ordinating this activity and identifying opportunities for greater national and international collaboration. This is a fantastic opportunity both for the NVA and for videogame culture as a whole.’

Prof. James Newman of Bath Spa University said:

‘Despite an increased awareness of the cultural value of videogames and the long-term vulnerability of digital media, game preservation, curation and exhibition practice are still in their early stages. We’re really excited to be supported by the British Academy and Leverhulme Trust and to work with colleagues across the world to help establish ways to preserve and present videogames for future generations.’

Simons and Newman will publish their findings in a White Paper later this year. The White Paper will set out the key questions and offer best practice guidelines for future game preservation, curation and exhibition.

Train2Game News FF VII Remake Back With Square Enix

Japanese publisher Square Enix has taken back development duties for the upcoming remake of Final Fantasy VII.

The revamped version of arguably the publisher’s most iconic release was previously being built in partnership with third-party studio CyberConnect2 – as was revealed shortly after the game was unveiled back at E3 2015.

However, the arrangement with the studio has been terminated and all work on the game will be handled in-house by a Square Enix team, Kotaku reports. The news emerged during a recent Mobius Final Fantasy stream.

Naoki Hamaguchi, a member of the development team, said this was a “sensitive subject”, adding: “I’ve taken over the development side of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake. Up until now, development has progressed by receiving external collaboration, but from here on out, with production and quality in mind, we’re shifting to our in-house organisation.

“This company decision was made wanting to control quality as well as keeping the schedule stable.”

There are no more details on why this partnership has fallen apart, although Kotaku notes that FFVII Remake director Tetsuya Nomura previously took umbridge with a trailer CyberConnect2 put together for the project, claiming it didn’t adhere to Square Enix’s style.

Train2Game News LawBreakers

PlayStation®4 gamers will be able to beat gravity into submission and compete in gravity-defying competition in LawBreakers, the new multiplayer first-person shooter (FPS) from renowned game designer Cliff Bleszinski and Boss Key Productions.
LawBreakers will be enhanced for PS4™Pro and promises to challenge even the best players to bring their skills, get off the ground and deliver death from every angle as they experience thrilling fast-paced, omni-directional gunplay with innovative movement systems and combat abilities.

From the mind of Bleszinski, LawBreakers is set in a brand new futuristic world where the laws of gravity have been turned upside down. A war between the Law and the Breakers rages across a variety of iconic locations such as the boiling oceans of the Santa Monica coastline to the gravity-ravaged Grand Canyon and beyond.

Today Nexon also revealed its business model for the game which sees the base game starting at just $29.99. In addition, the company confirmed that there will be no season pass-style program and that all future content updates will be free. Also, there are no “pay-to-win” mechanics in the game, just a robust offering of cosmetics for players to earn via the game’s Stash-Box system.

“With LawBreakers, we wanted to honor the skill-based FPS games of yesteryear, all while embracing the new and pushing the genre in our own unique way,” said Bleszinski. “We found that messing with gravity, and having it mess with the player, adds a dynamic vertical element that will challenge players of all skill levels to go above their limits. Add in a variety of character role play-styles that go beyond the basic ‘tank, sniper and medic,’ a price point that we feel is fair to the player and the fact that it’s just damn fun to play – we’re confident LawBreakers will be one of the best valued and most challenging FPS games on PC or console.”

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with Cliff and his team to bring such a unique and challenging combat experience to PS4,” said Owen Mahoney, President and CEO, NEXON Co., Ltd.  “This marks a major milestone for Nexon as we launch onto a home videogame console for the first time in the company’s history.”

The PS4™ version of LawBreakers will make its debut at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, June 13-15, and attendees will be among the first to experience its unique brand of gravity-defying combat. Qualified media and influencers are encouraged to book appointments to play the game on PS4™ and PC game as space will be limited.

LawBreakers (rated M) will now launch simultaneously on PlayStation®4 Pro and on Steam later this year, but no release date has been announced at this time.

Train2Game News Nintendo Switch Best Selling Console

According to the NPD Group, which tracks video game sales in the United States, the Nintendo Switch system was the best-selling video game hardware in the month of April with more than 280,000 units sold.
This is the second month in a row that Nintendo Switch has led the pack in video game hardware sales, following a record-breaking launch in March. April sales of Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems (more than 68,000 units sold) combined to make up almost half of all hardware sales across all dedicated video game systems.

The Mario Kart 8 Deluxe game was the top-selling video game in April with more than 460,000 physical units sold. With digital sales added, the total is more than 550,000 units. Making this number more impressive is the fact that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe launched on April 28, which only accounts for two days’ worth of sales in the reporting period, which cut off on April 29.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild game for Nintendo Switch continued its legendary run, coming in as the third-highest-selling video game in April. The critically acclaimed open-air adventure will receive even more content with the upcoming launch of two DLC packs in the summer and holiday season of this year. The DLC is now available for pre-purchase via an Expansion Pass. 1-2-Switch and digital-only game Snipperclips – Cut it out, together! also saw strong sales in April.

Nintendo will look to continue this momentum into the summer with a series of great new games for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS. The upcoming lineups for both systems include Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia (Nintendo 3DS, May 19), Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers from Capcom (Nintendo Switch, May 26), ARMS (Nintendo Switch, June 16), Ever Oasis (Nintendo 3DS, June 23) and Splatoon 2 (Nintendo Switch, July 21). Nintendo 3DS games Hey! Pikmin and Miitopia both launch on July 28, the same day as New Nintendo 2DS XL, Nintendo’s newest hand-held system.

*Data regarding physical sales of games are from the NPD Group. Data regarding digital downloads of games and combined physical/digital life-to-date numbers are from Nintendo’s internal sales figures. All numbers, unless otherwise stated, are specific to the United States only.
