Train2Game student Darroch McNaught has been featured on the front cover of The Inverness Courier.
Darroch McNaught is Chief Creative Officer at Deuxality, an Inverness based app development company. The company has currently been working on AR Technology uses.

These technologies are what caught the eye of The Inverness Courier. The article discusses Darroch and Deuxality’s plans to use AR Technology to aid tourists visiting the city. The app will give information in art galleries on artists and paintings for example.

We here at Train2Game would like to wish Darroch and Deuxality a massive congratulations. 

Train2Game News Fabble’s Adventure

Train2Game student, James Mahon, has been working to create a game inspired by kids, for kids.
​The game, Fabble’s Adventure, started with a bad drawing of the character ‘Fabble’, ‘Fabble’ being an urban word for ‘fabulous’. Fabble is a rice grain who some say looks like an astronaut or an eskimo but it’s a rice grain.

Fabble had a name and a face, all that was missing was his personality. James then saw a toddler running around enjoying himself when suddenly, he fell down flat on his face. James’ gut reaction was to laugh but then he realised; Fabble should have the personality of a toddler! 

Every hero needs a villain. After meeting a little boy at a New Year’s Eve party, James and the boy drew some doodles out and the boy drew a picture of a monster with a big head and big red eyes. He coloured it in and explained the picture to me; his name was Ghosthead, a bug that lives underground. The big red eyes shoot lasers and he gets angry easily.

The hero and villain were born thanks to the inspiration of children. 

The whole idea still seemed a bit incomplete, Fabble needed a friend or a sidekick. Left to James’ imagination once more, it was thought A little pink jellyfish can be his sidekick. She was given the personality of a baby and was named ‘Minx’ because she acts mischievously. 

James said:

“I was studying with Train2Game at the time. I was able to use everything it taught me to write a concept and build a working prototype. Since then, I was working hard to get the art into the game and make it all work. One year and five months later, I finally released the game on mobile! The game is heavily inspired by kids so I have to thank them for being in the right place at the right time.

I’m working my way into the gaming industry. I’m a versatile designer with a good work ethic. I’m passionate about the player’s experience and creating content the player will remember.”

Train2Game News Catch up with Ben Stoneman

Ben Stoneman now at Unity talks to Train2Game about his time with T2G, Game Jams, One Game A Month, Unity and his ongoing games making journey 
Ben is a favourite of Train2Game and studied with T2G for a number of years, taking part in game jams is a strong part of the wider community. It’s always great to speak with this young man who has a passion for games and is extremely well driven. Since finishing with Train2Game he’s gone on to a career in games and we caught up with him to hear how he’s getting on.

Ben enjoyed Train2Game and it was a catalyst in his gaming career.  He found he learnt on the course but experience in making games and having good mentors are essential to developing as a games maker and therefore a career in the games industry. Taking part in Train2Game Game Jams taught him about the development process. He’s gone on to mentor at Game Jams and be part of the judging process. Ben still regularly attends game jams and sees it as essential to becoming a better game developer. 

Ben now takes part in one game a month, a collective of games makers that share their projects in creating a title a month. Creating nice simple games and he encourages players to first make the first ever game: Pong.  He sees it as a way to train yourself as a developer which highly recommends. Through the experience he’s learnt a great deal and made a huge variety of games. He’s not going to release any games as yet as he is still aware that he is growing as a developer.

Ben works in the support team at Unity providing answers to any enquiry from any Unity user. He’s enjoying it a great deal, providing assistance by day and making games by night. He’s found that his skills as a rounded developer have continued to grow.

Ben Stoneman, Unity Support Team: ‘Train2Game is a catalyst in your game development career. However, I do believe that if you are not honing your skills without T2G’s help (in your personal/free time) then you will not make it in the industry. You need to want to do it, like an alcoholic wants to go to the pub.’

‘In my first T2G game jam, I learnt about the development process. Most of what I know now, the skills that make me a good game developer come from mentors and personal projects (make an inventory system that looks cool). The learning material helps only a small amount but having mentors is very important in life.’

‘I did go on to judge at a game jam, only a small game jam at “Insomnia” Games Festival. It was okay, but the fun was not in judging but in helping people with their Unity and general game development questions.’

‘One Game a Month, well it is exactly as it sounds. Starting from now, you begin making a game and the deadline is the last day of the month. The game does not need to be “call of duty” it can be as simple as pong, in fact I recommend that you make pong to start.’

‘After a year you will find that you have made 12 games and you have experience in making different games. It is a good way to train yourself. A body builder goes to the gym every week to get bigger muscles, a game developer makes a game every week/month to become better.’

‘I’m keeping to it. I never really show off the games as they are for my own personal learning. It’s taught me a lot. Through it I’ve made boss battles, memory games, inventory systems, quest logs, networking/multiplayer systems, graphical shaders, dialogue systems and so much more!’

‘I’m not currently looking to develop the games further, there are game ideas that I love and hold in my mind, but I’m not really looking to make a game to sell yet. Rovio (makers of angry birds) made over 40 games before angry birds, I’m getting my first 40 games done now and out of the way 😉 I would encourage Train2Game to help its students to achieve it!’

‘I am attending plenty of Game Jams. Game jams are the staple diet of any game developer. If you are not making games, then you are doing it wrong. Game jams are a really good way to practice; they prompt you by giving your ideas (the theme) and a deadline (T -48hours). It is surprisingly hard to give yourself a deadline in the same way.’

‘I work in the Support team at Unity. I’m currently a support specialist; I deal with any question that anyone wants to ask. I help users that do not pay for premium support with technical questions or other general questions. It is going great, I’m the happiest I’ve been. I get to help game developers all day and make and play games in my spare time.’

‘I’m learning all the time. I went from someone who could only design games to someone who can make games all by myself. It is easy to stop learning and just settle but if games are your passion then even if you are a billionaire, you would still make games. I feel like I can make any game that is presented to me. The key to this is not in knowing all the answers already but in knowing how to find the answers by myself when I need them.’

‘In the future I plan to progress in Unity and ensure that Unity stays strong and helps anyone who wants to make games. I also like to mentor and teach others C#, blender3d and the Unity editor itself.’

Train2Game News PlasisGames is back and better than ever

Free online games platform created by Train2Game student updated and now back online.

A platform created by Train2Game student Sean Brady updated and now available for the people of the world to enjoy free-to-play online games. 

Sean from Dublin, Ireland, is delighted to have the platform live again. He’s been working to give the site a new look and remove barriers for player enjoyment.  Games are available in all popular online formats, the new site has been streamlined and many new games have been added. 

The site will continue to be improved with user feedback, also, games will be boosted and removed based on the popularity of the games when on the site. Plasis will work with partners that would like to post games on the site, which can be submitted through the platform.

Plasis game will also continue to develop its own games, including Hut of The Dead, which is inspired by zombie games, films and TV shows, such as The Walking Dead.

‘Apart from the publishing of games, the development side of Plasis Games is in full swing and will result in a small indie horror game for World Weaver to continue with Hut of the Dead series. Actually the game is a different take on the hut/house full of the walking dead/dying concept to deliver a more immersive relatable experience. The main delay has involved developing solutions to surpass the technical limitations of the prescribed engine and feature vacant tools. 

Frankly, the development is leaning more towards manual-granular game development trials and tribulations instead of their modern hyper productive counter-parts. Train2Game Fabble’s Adventure Development Update

Train2Game student James Mahon updates on Fabble’s Adventure, his progress on the course and plans for the future

James Mahon and team are working on Children’s platformer Fabble’s Adventure, and its progressing nicely. He plans to use his experience making the game to learn more about creating games and as a platform to develop more games in the future.

The development of Fabble’s Adventure is going really well. In the game Fabble and Minx are on a quest to find lost rice grains. It’s a traditional platformer aimed at young players with a cute yet exciting storyline. There are now six worlds for players to explore. Rewards have been introduced and replay-value added.

Current focus is programming and getting levels right, which has taken a great deal of time. The team is finding it a challenge making a game but ultimately very rewarding. At this point James is working with another Train2Game student who has taken up a position of head of QA and they are not looking for any additional help until the game launches.

James is enjoying the course, he sees it as a great chance to learn and socialise with people that have a common goal. He’s now working on portfolio projects having successfully completed course work. In the future wants to continue making similar games that have a positive effect on kids.

Train2Game student James Mahon: ‘We’ve made massive progress on the game’s environments and challenges. It’s a platformer that embraces traditional gameplay in with a cartoon look and feel. There are six different worlds for players to explore. In them, collecting items is a major part of the game flow and finding the hidden objectives are the main goal. When goals are accomplished, the player will set their own personal achievements for them to beat again, allowing for replay-ability and extended gameplay time.’

‘The game story features Fabble and Minx who are on a quest to find the lost rice grains throughout the different worlds in their universe. Their ultimate goal is to defeat Ghosthead, a mutant bug that terrorized the lost rice grains into fleeing their home. There are a variety of monsters, big and small, to defeat and a good range of challenges to overcome on their quest.’

‘The current focus is in programming to make the game’s challenges work as planned. There a numerous obstacles and pitfalls that we have to get functional in order start creating levels. We’re a small team with a big project and it’s very time consuming especially programming so that’s where a large part of the workforce is currently.’

‘The journey so far has been challenging but a lot of fun nonetheless. Taking a concept from paper to a working product is hard work but a rewarding experience. I’ve learned to appreciate game-making much like playing a game. There’s always a personal sense of accomplishment when overcoming a challenge and that’s what motivates me to continue.’

‘I’ve successfully interviewed a candidate who is also a student of Train2Game on the QA game tester course. He’s currently providing much needed support with the programming tasks and has the major role as head of QA throughout development.’

‘The recruitment drive is over for now. We have enough workers to get the project done and on time. There will be a new recruitment drive when the game enters QA in the later stages of development. We’ll be on the lookout for beta testers and even testers that fit within the game’s target audience. The most preferable skill is a working knowledge of programming concepts to be able to break the game and find bugs that could ruin the game experience.’

‘Level design is next on the list for the game, as soon as the game’s challenges are implemented. My studies as a designer will help out with this most important aspect. I want to create simple but fun gameplay with a variety of challenges while embracing the traditional platformer gameplay style.’

‘I’m currently halfway through with my Train2Game portfolio projects after having successfully completed my tutor marked assignments. I enjoy reading through my course work and applying what I’ve learned. Also, being a part of Train2Game’s community seeing as I have somewhere to hang out and socialize with people that have a similar passion. There’s also the much needed support for students from staff to help make our ambitions become a reality.’

‘In the future, I want to start an independent videogame company to specialize in creating mobile and PC games for kids. Fabble’s Adventure is the only game I’m committed to at the moment. I have other games for kids in the concept stage waiting to be created. I want to finish what I’m doing with this game before I take on another project.’

‘It’s still important for me to create games for kids. I wouldn’t want to turn down a good opportunity to create video game products, I believe, they will love. I also believe video games are a great learning tool and that means a lot more for me to create games that have a positive influence on kids.’

Train2Game News Soldier uses experience for games career

Soldier will use his military experience as he embarks on career in gaming

Former soldier and Train2Game student now focusing on a career in gaming, plans to use military experience as inspiration for making games

Train2Game student and former soldier, Daniel Smith (Smudge) has left the army to embark full time on his games making journey. He plans to use his unique insight into warfare to develop military strategy and RPG games.

The course is going very well for Dan. Train2Game has been very understanding, when he embarked on the course he was still serving. It was tough to balance getting through the course alongside the requirements of military training for the 28 year old.

Dan gained extensive experience and training in the army, he had many roles including; Sapper, Medic, Combat Engineer and Searcher. Dan served in Afghanistan 2011. Dan enjoyed the travel, camaraderie and the accomplishments during his time serving.

He’s since left the army to pursue life dreams as a games designer. He’s studying computer games design with Train2Game. He plans to use his army experience as inspiration for games.

Train2Game student, Daniel Smith: ‘I’m 28, from Newark (near Nottingham), although I have just moved to Preston. I’m studying the Computer Game Designers Course with Train2Game. It’s going well at the moment, but it was quite sporadic while I was in the Army. Sometimes I would be able to get into a good study pattern, other times there was a lot going on, from additional training, which can be long and intense, to exercises aboard and deployments. This meant I would have to spend a lot of effort catching up.’

‘I’ve just started Section 2 Part C. The experience has been very positive, they’ve been very understanding of my situation and have given me lots of support and advice. I’ve wanted to become a Game Designer for some time, before taking the course I had no idea what was required to become one, so taking the course to make sure I have all the skills and knowledge I need.’

‘I was a Sapper in the Royal Engineers, After completing Basic Training I was trained as a Combat Engineer, learning such skills as Water Supply, Field Fortifications and Demolitions. I then went on to being trained as an Electrician. I had many roles after I had finished my training, I was given the responsibility of looking after a store, and being trained as a Team Medic, I volunteered to be trained in EOD (Explosive Ordinance Disposal) and further trained as a Searcher.’ 

‘I have a lot of positive memories from the Army. I’ve visited many places, like Petra in Jordan and Bosnia. I’ve been parachuting, white water rafting and scuba diving. But my best memories have to be with the friends I made and the (now legendary) things we all got up to. I’ve also achieved a lot, even completing some of the training courses were huge accomplishments. I served in Afghanistan in 2011 as a Searcher, which involved clearing IEDs (Improvised Explosive Devices) routes and buildings.’

‘I’ve now left the military, Army life was starting to get in the way of where I wanted my life to go. I’ve always been interested in gaming. I prefer playing computer games over reading books or watching TV. I’m also an avid wargamer and have been since I was in my early teens. it seemed logical to start studying the subject.’ 

‘I have written a set of rules for a squad-sized tabletop game that draws from my army experience of firefights, being fast and chaotic events that can easily devolve into a confusing mess if not controlled well. I also have an idea for a war inspired game that involves the use of infantry tactics, as well having to manage what equipment you take with you on missions. I am a fan on RTS, TBS and RPGs games and would really enjoy creating games in there genres.’

‘I’ll predominantly draw from the fighting side of my time in the army for war-style games, but this sense of conflict and overcoming obstacles will translate to other genres, particularly RPGs. Soldiers also have a very unique sense of humour that will inevitably find its way into my games.’

‘I hope to work my way up to the position of Senior Designer and Lead Designer. I hope to create games that people will love to play and that will be looked on as classics.’

Train2game News Game Marmalade game jam needs students

Game Marmalade gathers momentum but needs more participants

Train2Game Game Jam organised by students has secured a major prize and support but needs more students to make the Game Jam a huge success

Train2Game student Slinks is organising the first ever online Game Jam for Train2Game students. She’s done incredibly well in setting up the event, four teams have signed up so far but the Game Jam could certainly get bigger.

Prizes have been secured and a theme will be decided at the beginning of the event. The Game Jam takes place on the 27th May. Students have heard about the jam and starting to sign up but more are needed. It’s a great networking opportunity, a way to improve skills and a great way to create more portfolio work.

Train2Game has provided a gaming laptop for the winning team. A student at YoYo games could also be providing a prize. Students will make a full game during the event and be able to use any games produced to impress future employers.

The organisers are on the lookout for more participants from all Train2Game disciplines and ideally want to source a Dev for the judging panel.

Train2Game student and Game Jam organiser, Slinks, said:  ‘It’s certainly a slow burner and although I’ve put a lot of hard work into getting the message out there, it’s been more difficult than expected to get people involved. However I haven’t given up and I will continue to work on making Game Marmalade a success, as I believe it is important for students to have contact with other students, especially on a distance learning course, as it can feel very isolated studying on your own. This is something I experienced in the second year of my course and what prompted me to start the Team speak channel and now organising Game Marmalade.’

‘Train2Game are still top of the stack when it comes to prizes, with their generous donation of a gaming laptop for the winning team. I’ve also been contacted by a fellow student, Ryan Pearton of YoYo Tech, who has some interesting ideas for prizes which will be confirmed in the next couple of weeks. When I have more information I will update the website. We currently have 4 teams of 4, with a good mix of people in each, so we should be able to get 4 great games together at least.’

‘There will be a theme for Game Marmalade, as the aim of the event is to make a working game which uses the theme in some way. Teams have been asked to put forward their suggestion for a theme and at the beginning of the event all the suggestions will be put into a hat and one will be picked out at random. Whatever is picked out of the hat will be the theme for the entire event and teams will need to incorporate it into their game in some way. For instance if the theme was yellow you might make the UI buttons yellow, or you might use yellow in the title, but points will be awarded for how creatively the theme is used.’

‘I would really like to get a Dev on the judging panel as it’s totally artist heavy at the moment, the teams are going to have to come up with some good looking games if it stays the way it is lol. But yes, we are looking for as many people to get involved as possible. The more teams we have, the more interesting it’ll be to see the different art styles and the different ways the theme is used and interpreted.’

Train2game News Develop Brighton

Develop:Brighton’s annual search for the next big thing in independent games development is underway as submissions open for its sixth Indie Showcase at www.developconference.com.

The conference’s free-to-enter Indie Showcase celebrates the very best of indie game development with an exhibition featuring the ten best entries as chosen by a panel of experts, chaired by Assyria Games’ Adam Green.

All 10 finalists receive two free Indie Dev Day conference passes, up to five Expo passes, pre-event publicity and a profile on the event website, plus the opportunity to show off their games to around 1,800 developers and publishers at the event.

Over the past five years, more than 500 indie developers have submitted their games to the judging panel. Alumni winners includes the critically acclaimed Gunpoint; That Dragon, Cancer; Darklings which has made it into the top-100 grossing games chart on iOS; and last year’s winner, Hue by Fiddlesticks which scooped both the People’s Choice and Overall Showcase award.

“Each year, the quality of submission to the Develop:Brighton Indie Showcase seems to get higher and higher and it’s fantastic to see our growing list of shortlisted alumni going on to both critical and commercial success,” commented Andy Lane, managing director of conference organisers Tandem Events. 
 
“The showcase is now in its sixth year and continues to be a fantastic opportunity for indie developers to get their games in front of publishers, the gaming press and their fellow peers,” added Adam Green, managing director of Assyria Games and chair of the judging panel.

“The diversity and detail of games submitted to the competition is something to be admired and highlights the good health the UK indie game scene is currently in. I can’t wait to see what this year’s selection has to offer.”

Dan Da Rocha, director of 2015 Overall Indie Showcase winner, Hue, added, “Being involved in Develop:Brighton’s Indie Showcase is great for feedback and exposure for your game. Some of the industry’s top developers and journalists attend the event, so being able to get your game in front of them for free is brilliant. On top of this you can win an award or two, which gives you credibility as a developer and further exposure for your team and game.”

Submissions for the Develop Indie Showcase are now open and it’s completely free to apply. Applicants wishing to enter must comply with the following rules:

– Studios with no more than 15 people
– Studios – and games – that are non-publisher funded
– Games which are not published by a third party at the time of submission
– Games that have a development budget of less than £1million
– Games that are created in the “indie spirit”

The deadline to enter is 19 May and the overall Indie Showcase and People’s Choice winners will be announced to press and delegates at the Develop:Brighton Conference on Thursday 14 July 2016.

Train2game News Train2game Student meet up at Rezzed

Attendees heading to Rezzed this year have a great chance to meet and hang out with other students.

One of the biggest indie events on the UK calendar, EGX Rezzed takes place 7-9 April and Train2Game students are using the opportunity to hang out. Train2Game student Richard S is heading up plans to meet up and wants students to get in touch then join him at the event.

Gaming events are a great chance to meet other students; talk courses and games. Students can meet people in a similar situation and potentially work together. It’s great to meet people on the same course and on different courses to hear about their experiences.

There’s a number of amazing things to see at Rezzed, including: all things Indie and VR. It’s good inspiration to get into gaming and to strive forward in completing the course. Meeting up is a real positive and good for personal progression.

Events like Rezzed are a superb chance to interact with the industry and see what games are coming out. It’s a start at networking with the industry, a chance to build confidence.

Richard S spoke to Train2Game about why he is attending and why others should join him.

Richard S, Train2Game student: ‘I am very excited that Rezzed has come around again. I will take in what I can from the event and no doubt this event will give me a lot of drive with carrying on through my course, and even give me ideas with possible future projects I might be a part of.’

‘Since joining up with Train2Game on the Games Developer course I have tried to throw myself right into the industry. I believe that networking is a helpful component to finding work within the games industry. I want to meet Developers, publishers and industry bodies (like UKIE), also other fellow gamers.’

‘I feel that relating to people in a similar situation to myself is a positive: being on a long distance learning course and having a considerable interest for computer games. Meeting up would help me and my motivation for completing the course.’

‘If I meet with other programmers we can discuss how we are finding it and can discuss too possibly how we approach our studies. I feel I could even benefit I think from hearing how other people study even if they are on a different discipline like game design or arts or the QA course.’

‘I’m looking forward to Dead Pixels 2, Gang Beasts, Job Simulator, Orcs Must Dies Unchained, Overcooked (I do like a party game), Total War Warhammer, Warhammer The End Times Vermitide.’

‘These games catch my eye. I would like to see every game on show however and if anyone catches my interest I will hope to try and have a play on it even if a short go. I am keen to see what might be on offer in the Leftfield Collection also which are games that may be a little different from the norm.’

‘I am incredibly keen to have some time with the VR headsets this event as well. I’ve had a few tries with VR before from events. I am incredibly keen to have more time on these again. I find VR to be incredibly exciting as a gamer two fold.’

‘Rezzed is a big deal because this is a video games event from the people behind at Eurogamer.net. They have playable pre-release games for PC and console. A focus on indie titles particularly, developer sessions from people within the industry and The Gamesindustry.biz career fair where you can acquire advice relating to getting into the industry. Also the Rezzed sessions I am a fan of where you can get insight into games making, advice for developers and for people looking to get into development.’

‘It’s a chance to find out about the courses other students are studying and what they enjoy about it personally. Talk games, games and possibly a bit more games. Find out if anything in particular has attracted them to Rezzed this year. Get to know each other on a non-course related level too.’

‘I hope to see any other students that are planning on going this year. I have actually made a thread in the forums to try and help us meetup over the three days so feel free to post your interest in there. I hope everyone is doing alright on their courses too. Keep at it and best of luck.’

Train2game News Train2Game students creating own Game Jam

Free Game Jam organised by Train2Game students, for Train2Game students will take place 27th May. Train2Game also helping to create and support the event.

Students looking to improve their skills and network have created their own game jam. Train2Game is helping the initiative with advice and publicising the event on its channels. The game jam will be remote, with participants getting involved over the web from any location.

Participants can create their own teams or sign up via the Team Speak channel and form teams on the group. Those taking part can suggest a theme that will then be selected at the beginning of the event. Judges for the competition will be made of students past and present. All entries will be visible on the forum, where students can vote on their favourite.

Students can use their entries to gain experience and for use in their portfolios. They will also find a network of friends that could become professional contacts in the future. Train2Game is also offering a gaming laptop to the winning team.

Train2Game student and head of Game Marmalade, Slinks said: ‘I decided to do a Game Jam because I was egged on by my fellow students, late at night in my Teamspeak channel. There is a slightly selfish element to putting this event on as well, as I’m also looking out for my future. If I can’t get a new future in game art, I might be able to get a new future in online event organisation. It’s another string to my bow.’

‘Obviously everyone in the Teamspeak channel is interested and I’ve got a team together. But I think this is going to be a slow burner. People are only just learning more about the event as the post I put up this evening has much more information, answers many more questions and gives a better structure for the event. Once people have read and digested the post, I’m hoping it’ll kick things off.’

‘There are many benefits for students such as, learning to work as a team, experience working to a deadline, improving communication skills, discovering your strengths and weaknesses, learning to work under pressure, problem solving, learning how you cope with stress, the sense of achievement when you complete the project, new friendships, new teams, a potential studio, the possibilities are endless. But by forging some strong alliances through events like this now, we give ourselves the best opportunity to be successful in the future as this is how studios are formed.’

‘Not only will you have examples of your own work to show prospective employers, you’ll also have an example or that work in action. Being involved in a team project also demonstrates you are capable of being a team player and possess some of the qualities listed above. So I believe getting involved in Game Marmalade with be good for a student’s portfolio’s and their C.V.’

‘People can help by getting their own teams together and registering them with me as soon as possible. Also if there are any students out there who would like to be involved but can’t make the event, I’m looking for judges so I need to hear from these people as soon as possible as well.’

‘People can sign up with me by sending all the details of their team and a theme to me and I’m holding regular meets in my channel every Friday. People can come to the channel on any other evening as well, I try to be in there most evening around 7pm but people pop in and out at all hours so apart from Friday it’s a case of drop by and see who’s about.’

A spokesman for Train2Game added, ‘This initiative demonstrates a key part of developing students into team players for the modern games industry. Train2Game will be offering a magnificent gamers laptop as the top prize for this Game Jam.’
