Train2Game News Old School RuneScape Mobile Beta

Access to Old School RuneScape Mobile’s new members’ beta is being made available to every single Old School RuneScape or RuneScape subscriber, as part of a staggered rollout.

Following a limited test rollout yesterday, with the cap reached in just two hours, the members’ beta is today being opened up to enable a further 250,000 subscribers gain access.

Over the coming weeks, access will be scaled up to give every subscribed player the opportunity to continue their Old School RuneScape journey on Android devices while sat at home on the sofa, during the commute, in the canteen, and even in flight, leaving no excuse for XP waste.

On launch later this year, Old School RuneScape Mobile will become the first mainstream Western online RPG to deliver the complete MMO experience across both mobile and PC platforms, enabling players to seamlessly jump between devices and continue their adventure on either platform.

Conor Crowley, Director of Game Development, Jagex said:
“Since announcing our plans to bring both RuneScape games to mobile, the community has been clamouring to get their hands on the titles. Old School RuneScape Mobile has been running 24/7 in invite-only closed beta for the past couple of months, and, with development progressing really well, we wanted to share this progress with the most important people: our members. That begins now and, soon, every Old School and RuneScape subscriber will have access to Old School mobile – the next stage of bringing two of the world’s most popular online RPGs to the world’s most popular gaming platforms”

Since it first launched in February 2013 with the backing of 450,000 members of the RuneScape community, Old School RuneScape’s success has continued to grow, delivering new lands and new adventures that take it far beyond a purely nostalgic vanilla experience. One of Jagex’s flagship living games, Old School features player-polled content including the recently released raid, Theatre of Blood, the Deadman Invitational competitive game mode, and continues to be at the vanguard of collaboration between developers and its community.

While Old School RuneScape Mobile is becoming accessible to all members over the next month, RuneScape Mobile’s closed beta is currently invite-only.

Train2Game News Benchmark app report

Berlin-based app mobile measurement company Adjust today published the results of its annual benchmark report for 2017.

The data from the report was taken between January 1, 2017, and December 31, 2017, tracking 11,000 apps, with 10.7 billion installs and 1.29 trillion events analyzed across the world. Deeper coverage of countries included China, France, Germany, Japan, Russia, Turkey, UK and the US.

The benchmark report provides detailed insight into the app market and app user behaviour, providing in-depth monthly analysis of user engagement, retention, sessions and fraud by country and app vertical.

How the world engages with apps – WeChat dominates in China
Compared to 2016, retention rates and engagement in 2017 were much higher. However, the current Adjust benchmark report shows that app developers still face big challenges when it comes to retaining users. By day 14 after the download, only 13% of app users return. Retention on iOS is consistently higher than on Android, but only by 1-3%.

By country, Japanese users have the highest retention rates of all: consistently around 3% above average. Meanwhile, Chinese users are the hardest to keep. After day one, 80% have left an app, and by day seven only 7% continue to use one at all. This can partially be explained by the dominance of WeChat, and the lower likelihood of Chinese users leaving the platform for other apps.

Entertainment and Gaming apps keep their users well engaged. By day 30, Entertainment apps see the highest retention rates. Meanwhile, Travel apps have trouble keeping their users on board, with only a 7% retention rate by day 12, explained by the cyclical nature of travel booking.

The report also looks at elite retention, covering the highest performing apps in their own cohort. Retention of Utilities performs best of all, with 44% retention on day one (near half of the initial user base). By day 30, almost a third of users are still around. Business apps perform second best, and great Games perform similarly on day one, though by day seven there’s a 5% difference between the three verticals.

Monetizing Apps – Fight of the platforms
The mobile app market continues to be highly lucrative. In 2017, 2 million apps were released in both stores, and worldwide mobile ad spending increased 33.6% up to $142 billion[1], with $17 billion being spent on performance ads. Google and Facebook drive half of all attribution, and Google’s vast network seems to be slightly the better option to reach and engage users.

However, user engagement increased over time, regardless of source, by approximately 2.5 sessions per day. Utility apps are used the most, with 3 sessions per day. This is followed by Games and Entertainment apps with 2.5 sessions per day. E-commerce, Business & Travel apps range from 1.5 to 2 sessions per day.

In the first week after install, Android sees more events. But over a month, iOS far surpasses it’s rival, with between seven and eight events per day. By day 19, users perform one less event on Android than on Apple. By global comparison, the US seems to be in the lead, when it comes to a number of events. The US triggers around two more events per day than China or Russia.

Mobile Ad Fraud – Android suffers the most
Every vertical, country and network was affected by mobile ad fraud in some way in 2017. By vertical, Games are the most affected, over a third of fraud stopped by Adjust (per vertical) was targeting gaming apps. This is partially due to gaming apps spending more on mobile marketing than any other. Also, it’s not just those after ad spend who defraud Games, but users too.

Beyond the collection of ‘other’ categories, E-commerce applications feature a high distribution of mobile app fraud, about 20% of Adjust’s dataset.

While no device is immune to fraud, it is telling that around twice as much of it occurs on Android. There are a few reasons to explain this, from the ease of which Android devices can be jailbroken to the sheer amount of Android devices sold vs. Apple’s. However, Adjust’s Fraud Specialist, Andreas Naumann, believes “click injection” to be the main reason for this trend. This type of fraud is a sophisticated form of click-spamming which only affects Android devices.

Train2Game News Game moment GIFs on mobile

Megacool, a mobile game technology startup based in San Francisco and Oslo, Norway, has today announced that the company’s API, which allows mobile game developers to add a seamless way to share game moments through GIFs, is now available for iOS, Android and Unity developers.

Addressing a need in the mobile game market for cost-effective marketing tools, the Megacool API has exited beta with nearly one million GIFs already shared and is now available for all developers at megacool.co.

Megacool’s technology lets players record a short clip of the gameplay, for instance a high scoring round or a winning move, in the form of a GIF without impacting game performance. With only a few quick taps, players can send that GIF as well as a download link for the game directly to a specific friend or contact via SMS text message and other social channels. This helps spread the game organically and virally through digital word-of-mouth between friends, which players trust more than traditional in-game advertising.

Similar to the way that Snapchat lets users capture 10-second clips of what is going on in their lives, Megacool lets users capture one to 10-second clips of what is going on in their mobile gaming life, and share it with friends just as easily. Developers who have participated in the Megacool beta with deep integration in their games have seen a 10% conversion rate of shares to installs, as well as a 10% rate of re-engaging lapsed users.

“Traditional user acquisition for mobile games, consisting of in-game advertisements in the form of disruptive video and static interstitials, is fundamentally broken,” said Nicolaj Broby Petersen, founder and CEO of Megacool. “In a system where the biggest publishers on the market can buy up advertising inventory and drive pricing up, only they can compete. Developers needs new and innovative ways to spread their games in a cost-effective way.”

Megacool’s API has been developed to address the specific needs of mobile game developers and marketers who have been squeezed out of the high-cost mobile game advertising market. Founded in June 2015 by the creators of Dirtybit, a leading Norwegian mobile game studio that launched and grew the Fun Run series of games to more than 100 million downloads, Megacool represents a new and unique option for developers to grow their player base and drive downloads. Megacool has grown directly out of the team’s experience and success in growing the Fun Run series without a single dollar spent on marketing or user acquisition.

“We found early on that the key to the success of Fun Run was how it was being shared virally between users, driving downloads without a single advertisement,” Petersen continued. “Our goal with Megacool is to give developers the tools to make the most valuable method of sharing, word-of-mouth between trusted friends, easier than ever inside of their games.”

“Megacool consistently drives new users for us that spend more and retain better than organic users at a fraction of the cost of traditional UA channels. We see double digit conversion from GIF referral to install,” said Kevin O’Neil, founder of Candywriter, a mobile game developer with nearly 30 games and apps in their portfolio that have been downloaded more than 60 million times.

In the months ahead, Megacool will continue to refine and add new features to its API, including further customization options for developers around what types of clips can be recorded and what can be included when a clip is shared. In a future update, Megacool will also add the ability for players to edit their GIF recordings by overlaying their own text, similar to pictures and video shared on Snapchat and Instagram.
