“Voice control is everywhere. And it’s not just Siri and Alexa. These days, even our cars seem desperate to talk to us. But where is voice control in the world of games?” says Creative Director, Thomas Keane.

“With Unknown Number, we wanted to create a game that fully explored voice as a core gameplay mechanic. And what better starting point than a mysterious phone call? A phone call that might just save the world… but only if you’ve got the gift of the gab.”

Described as a “First Person Talker,” Unknown Number defies the usual restrictions of Adventure games and brings a whole new life to the genre with its unique Voice-Control mechanics. Using cutting edge voice recognition technology, players can enjoy total immersion in this high-octane audio blockbuster, featuring a full cast of professional voice actors, creative sound design and engaging FMV.

And of course – like any great heist movie – the plot has more twists and turns than an offshore oil drill.

In this genre-defying thriller, use your voice to…

  • SOLVE complex puzzles to unlock treasure vaults
  • NAVIGATE a maze-like oil rig under serious time pressure
  • IMPERSONATE high-profile oil execs on conference calls
  • TRICK henchman into abandoning their guard posts
  • JOIN a burgeoning underground eco-movement
  • MAKE crucial moral decisions that impact the story
  • TELL knock-knock jokes… and maybe even SAVE the world

Train2Game News Microsoft Acquires Activision

With three billion people actively playing games today, and fueled by a new generation steeped in the joys of interactive entertainment, gaming is now the largest and fastest-growing form of entertainment.

Recently, Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq: MSFT) announced plans to acquire Activision Blizzard Inc. (Nasdaq: ATVI), a leader in game development and interactive entertainment content publisher.

This acquisition will accelerate the growth in Microsoft’s gaming business across mobile, PC, console and cloud and will provide building blocks for the metaverse.

Microsoft will acquire Activision Blizzard for $95.00 per share, in an all-cash transaction valued at $68.7 billion, inclusive of Activision Blizzard’s net cash.

When the transaction closes, Microsoft will become the world’s third-largest gaming company by revenue, behind Tencent and Sony. The planned acquisition includes iconic franchises from the Activision, Blizzard and King studios like “Warcraft,” “Diablo,” “Overwatch,” “Call of Duty” and “Candy Crush,” in addition to global eSports activities through Major League Gaming. The company has studios around the word with nearly 10,000 employees.

Bobby Kotick will continue to serve as CEO of Activision Blizzard, and he and his team will maintain their focus on driving efforts to further strengthen the company’s culture and accelerate business growth. Once the deal closes, the Activision Blizzard business will report to Phil Spencer, CEO, Microsoft Gaming.

“Gaming is the most dynamic and exciting category in entertainment across all platforms today and will play a key role in the development of metaverse platforms,” said Satya Nadella, chairman and CEO, Microsoft. “We’re investing deeply in world-class content, community and the cloud to usher in a new era of gaming that puts players and creators first and makes gaming safe, inclusive and accessible to all.”

“Players everywhere love Activision Blizzard games, and we believe the creative teams have their best work in front of them,” said Phil Spencer, CEO, Microsoft Gaming. “Together we will build a future where people can play the games they want, virtually anywhere they want.”

“For more than 30 years our incredibly talented teams have created some of the most successful games,” said Bobby Kotick, CEO, Activision Blizzard. “The combination of Activision Blizzard’s world-class talent and extraordinary franchises with Microsoft’s technology, distribution, access to talent, ambitious vision and shared commitment to gaming and inclusion will help ensure our continued success in an increasingly competitive industry.”

Mobile is the largest segment in gaming, with nearly 95% of all players globally enjoying games on mobile. Through great teams and great technology, Microsoft and Activision Blizzard will empower players to enjoy the most-immersive franchises, like “Halo” and “Warcraft,” virtually anywhere they want. And with games like “Candy Crush,” Activision Blizzard´s mobile business represents a significant presence and opportunity for Microsoft in this fast-growing segment.

The acquisition also bolsters Microsoft’s Game Pass portfolio with plans to launch Activision Blizzard games into Game Pass, which has reached a new milestone of over 25 million subscribers.

With Activision Blizzard’s nearly 400 million monthly active players in 190 countries and three billion-dollar franchises, this acquisition will make Game Pass one of the most compelling and diverse lineups of gaming content in the industry. Upon close, Microsoft will have 30 internal game development studios, along with additional publishing and esports production capabilities.

The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and completion of regulatory review and Activision Blizzard’s shareholder approval.

Train2Game News Live Action Inmersive Cinema Gaming Experience

Aviary Studios is thrilled to announce that their live action video game The Gallery will launch this April for PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox and PlayStation consoles, iOS and Android platforms.

And, in a first for Europe, The Gallery will also release in UK cinemas where the audience will play the game by majority decision as part of an immersive and participative interactive experience.

Written and directed by Paul Raschid, one of the most prolific live action video game / interactive film creatives, The Gallery is a thrilling combination of hostage thriller and social drama with a dash of world film festival cinema aesthetic.

Filmed over a 6 week period in February and March, 2021, the game immerses audiences in an interactive experience set in two time periods – 1981 and 2021, both of which are of considerable political, social and cultural significance in UK history, cleverly reflected in the nuanced story. Players will face over 150 decision points as they navigate a story full of mystery and intrigue.

An exciting cast has been assembled for The Gallery including George Blagden (Versailles and Vikings); Anna Popplewell (The Chronicles of Narnia); Kara Tointon (Mr. Selfridge and Eastenders); Rebecca Root (The Queen’s Gambit); Richard Fleeshman (The Sandman and Coronation Street), Shannon Tarbet (Killing Eve and Love Sarah) and Fehinti Balogun (I May Destroy You).

The live action video (FMV) game genre debuted in the mid 1980s and was touted as the future of video games but was finally declared dead in the mid 1990s. The current renaissance of this somewhat niche genre –  a confluence of film and games – began around 2015 with such titles as Late Shift and Her Story and was turbo charged  in 2019 with Netflix’s  Bandersnatch. With filmmakers such as Paul Raschid (who has won a BAFTA Scotland for his linear film work) now looking to extend the live action video game to a wider film and TV audience and offering more diverse genres than the traditional horror experience, this niche genre could well be set for a resurgence.

The Gallery will launch this April for PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox and PlayStation consoles, iOS and Android platforms and a UK interactive cinema release. Please visit the official websites www.aviaryfilms.co.uk and www.paulraschid.com

Train2Game News 20 Years Of Mod Winners

Since 2002 when ModDB first launched, the biggest event in the calendar each year, continues to be the Player Voted Annual Mod Awards.

Since its inception over 1 million players have voted for their favorite mods, with many winners and top 10’s going on to change the gaming industry in profound ways.

The 2021 ModDB Mod of the Year awards marks the 20th Anniversary of one of the most prestigious events in the industry. These awards find their origins in 2002 as a way to acknoledge and recognize mod makers worldwide, who change the games we play in creative, inspiring and unique ways.

The inaugural winner in 2002 was Natural Section, and the team behind this mod (Unknown Worlds) went on to create Subnautica. Another winner is Garry’s Mod, who went on to create Rust and is now working on S&Box. Every story is unique, and you can find the lineup of all 20 winners here.

Perhaps the most interesting story is not the mods that won, but those that missed out, because many of the most recognized and celebrated mods in the industry (that you can see in the Mod Hall of Fame) did not always place. This includes Counter-Strike and Team Fortress which were released before the awards began in 2002, while DotA was overlooked almost entirely as the early days of ModDB had its roots strongly in FPS mods. DayZ was the 2012 runner up behind Black Mesa, and amazingly PLAYERUNKNOWN’s Battle Royale (PUBG) was an editors choice in 2014 but never featured in the players choice voting.

To mark the occasion, Scott Reismanis, founder of DBolical and ModDB, said “The Mod of the Year Awards are a favorite time of ours, an opportunity to pause and reflect, celebrate mods and people behind the projects. It’s a great honor to be reaching our 20th year standing on the shoulders of giants, and we thank everyone who’s contributed to the community over that time.”

Please see the following links for our article reviewing the past twenty winners, as well as the article which takes a look at the unique award logos designed each year to mark the occasion: – Celebrating 20 Years of Mod WinnersAward Logo Designs Over the Years
