​Finch, a virtual reality startup, will showcase their Mobile VR Kit based on No-Camera Motion Controller at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
Finch has designed the Shift as the first no-camera motion controller to bring exceptional VR experience to smartphone owners. Shift matches the functionality of the best motion controllers for Oculus and HTC Vive without the need for external cameras and wires. By the end of 2017, Finch is aiming to add inside-out room scale tracking by smartphone camera and will have at least 50 mobile VR multiplayer apps compatible with Finch Shift.

The controller employs modified IMU sensors to determine real-time hands’ position with sub-centimeter accuracy and a 360-degree tracking range. Coupled with the ‘PC-to-mobile’ streaming software, it allows running existing Steam VR, Oсulus and HTC Vive apps and games on smartphones. The Finch Shift will also allow mobile gamers to interact in virtual reality through a multiplayer option.

Finch Shift’s Developer’s Kit, priced at $179, includes the sets for both hands, SDK/API, accessories, three demo games and the streaming software pack. The DK1 will be shipped in February 2017. The consumer version will hit the market in the second half of 2017 after Finch’s Kickstarter campaign this spring.

“We believe that Finch Shift VR Kit will accelerate consumers’ interest to virtual reality in the near future. The main reasons for slow market expansion have been limited functionality and low quality of content for mobile VR, and prohibitive costs of high-end hardware. With the Shift Kit, anyone who has a decent smartphone can play the best virtual reality games from SteamVR and mobile VR app stores. Plus, you can share the fun with your friends, just like you do it with console gaming,” said the company’s CEO Alexey Kartashov.

In spite of billions of dollars invested in virtual reality startups, current market demand for VR gadgets is significantly below earlier predictions. The industry experts see the mobile VR segment as the key to the doors to virtual reality consumer adoption. Tractica researchers forecast global sales of smartphone-powered VR devices to reach 323 million units between 2015 and 2021. However, lack of natural input devices and other challenges with quality of mobile VR experience have been serious roadblocks to the mobile VR sector growth.

The Finch team believes that it has found a solution to the problem. By combining existing high- quality content with affordable devices, they hope to introduce the exciting world of virtual reality to millions of smartphone owners around the globe.  The attendees of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next month will have an opportunity to try Finch Shift in action at the Augmented Reality Marketplace (Las Vegas Convention Center, South Hall 2, booth 26737).

Sony reveal gun attachment for PlayStation Move

Many Train2Game students have already welcome motion controllers into their homes with open arms, but a new attachment from Sony could help swing some of those who remain unconvinced.

The Sharp Shooter will allow Train2Game students to use their PlayStation Move controllers in the fashion of a real gun when playing shooters. The new device will be compatible with the upcoming Killzone 3, along with other games including Time Crisis: Razing Storm, Socom 4 and Dead Space Extraction.

The official blurb about the PlayStation Move Sharp Shooter on the PlayStation Blog says:

“The PlayStation Move sharp shooter houses both the motion controller and navigation controller, giving you complete control over aiming, movement and interaction within the game. It will truly offer the most intuitive and immersive control experience ever found in a shooter game.

It was designed for both comfort and precision, including easily accessible buttons, a responsive digital trigger, adjustable shoulder stock and convenient access to the navigation controller.

In addition, the sharp shooter has incorporated a firing mode selector, realistic pump-action and a reload button that allow for new ways of engagement.”

The Sharp Shooter doesn’t have a yet fixed release date, but it’ll be available in time for Killzone 3 in February 2011. The US price is $39.99, with no signs of a UK price as of yet.

Kinect launched in the UK

Kinect for the Xbox 360 is now available in the UK, following a big Microsoft launch event at the Natural History Museum.  The star studded gathering was fronted by singer Leona Lewis and popular beat combo The Wanted. (If you can tell us who the latter actually are, it’d be much appreciated.)

Attendees at the Natural History Museum got to have fun ice skating, and of course, they got to play games using Kinect, the new hands free motion controller for the Xbox 360.

Meanwhile, thousands of people queued up outside games retailers across the country to be among the first to buy Kinect.. It marked the second midnight launch in as many days, with Call of Duty: Black Ops having launched at the same time on the previous night.

Microsoft have been quick to hail the success of Kinect, with Kinect product boss Kudo Tsunoda claiming the release of the peripheral has been bigger than the launch of the Xbox 360.

“This is as big a launch as any console launch we’ve ever done,” said Tsunoda.

“And the amount of events, the amount of people, pre-orders… all coming down for Kinect; it’s the biggest thing than Xbox has ever done.”

The Kinect product boss also told CVG that Kinect will evolve much like Xbox Live has.

“We look at Kinect in a lot of the same way we look at Xbox Live,” he said. “Xbox Live obviously looks a lot different today than it did when it was first released and I think that’s the same approach that we take with Kinect.”

He said Microsoft will “constantly be building new innovative experiences, new features and new things for people to do all with the same hardware”.

Tsunoda also added: “We’ve got lots of great stuff available at launch. You can see what we’re doing with the games, the great voice stuff with movies and Sky – but I do think it’s going to be the kind of thing we’re going to continue to build on and continue to deliver new features, so that anyone who buys the Kinect sensor now will be able to get all those types of fun things to do over time as we deliver new types of platform features.”

The comments from Tsunoda echo previous remarks made by Microsoft’s Corporate Vice President in Charge of Microsoft Game Studios, Phil Spencer who told GameSpot that Kinect is as core to the Xbox 360 as Xbox Live.

To some, the launch success of Kinect for the Xbox 360 won’t come as a surprise, with Microsoft reportedly having half a billion to spend on marketing the new device. The hype seems to have worked with retailers apparently suffering from Kinect shortages.  Stephen McGill, boss of the Xbox business in the UK, told CVG:

Lots of the retailers closed their pre-orders a good few weeks ago for launch night allocations and obviously the responsibility for us now is just to keep on replenishing that stock.”

“We’re manufacturing 24 hours a day, seven days a week – lots of planes, boats and trucks are planned and lined up ready to get regular replenishment stock out there. I think a lot of people are going to be enjoying this for Christmas this year.”

Microsoft are definitely confident about Kinect for the Xbox 360, however, analysts suggest that it’ll be the PlayStation 3 that wins the console war this Christmas.
