Rockstar on L.A. Noire: the structure of the game is revolutionary for this industry

LA Noire Train2Game blog image

L.A. Noire is one of the most anticipated games of the year and one that the Train2Game blog has been paying close attention to.  It’ll have some of the most sophisticated Art & Animation seen in a game, as you can see for yourself on the Train2Game blog.

With only a week to go until release now, L.A. Noire is getting a lot of publicity, and recently game director Brendan McNamara and VP of development Jeronimo Barrera gave a fascinating interview to The Guardian about the game. It’s an interesting read for Train2Game students.

MacNamara told the newspaper that Game Designers are now realising that games can be about human drama

“There’s no reason why you can’t have the same sorts of relationships – whether they’re about fear, hate or love – with a game character that you can with a film character. That’s one of the freedoms that technology gives you” he said.

Barrea agrees and says L.A. Noire goes someway to crossing the line between video games and television

Even though the structure of the game is revolutionary for this industry, it’s based on the tried and true formula of cop shows that have been around for years on television,” he said

“There’s an element people will be familiar with, whether you’re a hardcore gamer or not: you show up at a crime scene, you find evidence and then you go talk to suspects.”

As reported by the Train2Game blog, Macnamara has previously said in future realism will be hard to differentiate between video games, films and television.

The Rockstar pair believes that an emerging interesting in human drama in video games will change game development.

When you’re making games this big and so frigging complicated you have to have a good director and good writers, you have to have designers who are willing to take chances on creating new gameplay mechanics.” said Barrera

“Something has to change, that’s the only way of raising the bar. We’re taking lessons from Red Dead, which took lessons from GTA, we’re obviously evolving how these games are made.”

Barrera added that when it comes to Game Design, L.A. Noire is taking as big a step forward as Grand Theft Auto III.

We’re taking the same risks with LA Noire as we did when we published GTA 3” he said “At that time, I remember trying to explain to people that there aren’t really any levels, you can go where you want, you activate missions when you want. It was going over people’s heads. They thought it was absurd”

“Well, this game is a bit more cerebral, you have to talk to people, you have to figure out if they’re telling you the truth, but it’s taking that same sort of step that GTA took. We’re going from having a cinematic experience that you can control to a human experience that you can control.”

For more information on the Game Design elements behind L.A. Noire, see the Train2Game blog.

L.A. Noire is released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on 20th May, and as reported by the Train2Game blog, the Art & Animation is so sophisticated that the Xbox 360 version needs three discs.

So Train2Game, is it a positive thing that some games are becoming more like dramas? How do you think this changes Game Design? And would you like to work on this type of game in future?

L.A. Noire animation tech so advanced it needs 3 Xbox 360 discs

The extremely impressive Art & Animation techniques of L.A. Noire have certainly caused excitement on the Train2Game forum.

Now Rockstar has revealed that the game is so advanced, that the Xbox 360 version needs three discs to store all of the information. Meanwhile, L.A. Noire on the PlayStation 3 requires the usual one blu-ray disc.

However, Rockstar don’t believe that is will be an issue for 360 gamers.

“To tell the story and make the game we wanted to make, we knew that it was going to take an entire single layer Blu-ray disc and three Xbox discs,”  Rockstar’s Jeronimo Barrera told Kotaku.

“Since the game is built around the concept of progressing through individual cases from desk to desk, players on Xbox will find disc-swapping is hassle-free.

“In fact, players will only need to swap discs twice at natural breaks between cases without interrupting the flow of the game.”

Anyone who needs reminding about the highly impressive facial Art & Animation in L.A. Noire can see it for themselves here on the Train2Game blog. And as also reported by the Train2Game blog, Game Developers Team Bondi claim the technology used to build L.A. Noire will soon make it difficult to differentiate between video games, films and television.

Rockstar’s Barrera also told Kotaku how L.A. Noire could have been even bigger, but some of it has been set aside for DLC.

“Throughout development, we created lots of great cases, the bulk of which were central to the main story of Cole Phelps and his rise through the ranks of the LAPD, alongside other cases that felt more like strong stand-alone episodes,” he said.

“This gave us a powerful main story, and left us with quality extra content that we wanted to put out as DLC, that would slot seamlessly into the existing game.”

L.A. Noire is set for release 20th May on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

So Train2Game, is the L.A. Noire for Xbox 360 coming on three discs an issue for you? Or is it a testament to just how impressive the game will be? And do you think it’s a good move for Game Developers to announce DLC before a game is even released?

Also, the video seems to show what could be Bigfoot

New Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare gameplay trailer

Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare 4 horses

Rockstar has revealed another new trailer for upcoming Red Dead Redemption DLC, Undead Nightmare. The new trailer shows us what to expect from gameplay in Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare, which of course is lots of zombie killing.

The latest Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare also features an old-school creepy voice over saying “Prepare yourself, for demonic hordes from the Graveyard” and many other slightly cheesy, but oh so good phrases about the undead. You can see the new Red Dead Redemption: Undead Night mare trailer – The Graveyards – below.

Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare is set for release via download on October 26th. It’ll feature a new single player campaign in which John Marston tries to find a cure for the unexplained zombie plague. It’ll also feature new weapons, new outfits, new multiplayer modes and new ‘Missing Person’ side quests.

Rockstar has also revealed new information about the mythical creatures introduced in Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare – the four horses of the Apocalypse, Pestilence, Famine, Death, and War. Each have their own special perks for John Marston to take advantage of in Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare, so long as he can tame them.

Death – With Hell following close behind, Death carries with him a violent wake that rattles through the skulls of the undead, causing a spectacular cranial explosion for any zombie it comes in contact with.

Famine – Attracting a swarm of insects wherever it travels, Famine’s thin shadowy frame and crimson eyes mask an everlasting stamina.

Pestilence – A ghastly harbinger of plague and disease that’s easily identifiable by its exposed wounds and ocular haemorrhaging, Pestilence possesses an exceptionally high pain threshold.

War – Given power to take peace from the earth, the fiery red horse known as War ignites a trail of flame upon all those in its path, turning the living and the undead alike into smouldering ash.

Sound fun, don’t they? Be sure to check out the first Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare trailer for more insights into how the single player campaign is shaping up. You can also check out GameSpot for an exclusive Q & A about Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare with Rockstars’ Dan Houser.

Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare will be downloadable from Xbox Live for 800 points, and the PlayStation Network for £7.99 from October 26th.

So Train2Game, what are your thoughts on the new Undead Nightmare trailer? Which horse do you want? And how do you think Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare is shaping up?

As usual, leave your thoughts here on the Train2Game blog, or on the Train2Game forum.

Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare release date confirmed

Red Dead Redemption: Undead NightmareUndead Nightmare, the expansion for Red Dead Redemption will be released on October 26th. The release of Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare in the run up to Halloween seems highly appropriate given the zombie based storyline! Rockstar has also revealed that Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare will also bring new multiplayer content and will be available on disc.

According to the Rockstar games website, the plot behind Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare is as follows:

“Seemingly overnight, a zombie plague ravages the once bountiful frontier, decimating the landscape and reawakening the dead. In towns, settlements, and outposts throughout the world, the uninfected citizens are left to fight for survival against waves of the undead.  John Marston must ride out into the vast and terrifying world and survive long enough to find a cure.”

Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare will feature four different types of zombie, each with their own characteristics, and there will be variety of ‘infected’ animals for John Marston to deal with. Ammo can be scare in Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare but this can be combated through the use of a new weapon – the blunderbuss – which can be loaded with the remains of fallen zombies.

Additionally, the deadly Tomahawk and the Explosive Rifle make a triumphant comeback and will be available exclusively for those who downloaded the Legends and Killers Pack and the Liars and Cheats Pack.

Rockstar say Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare will feature a variety of new missions, challenges and events. Undead Nightmare also twists the ‘Wanted’ side-missions of Red Dead Redemption, and replaces them with ‘Missing Person’, where the player must find a missing survivor lost amongst the throngs of undead.

The expansion pack will also feature new multiplayer content, with Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare introducing Undead Overun. It’s brand new multiplayer survival mode where waves of infected enemies attack and players must work together to stay alive against increasingly difficult odds. (Sounds a bit like the Call of Duty zombie mode doesn’t it?)

You can see the trailer for Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare here.

Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare will be downloadable from Xbox Live for 800 points, and the PlayStation Network for £7.99. Alternatively, Red Dead Redemption Undead Nightmare will be available on a disc, along with the Outlaws to the End Co-Op Mission Pack, the Legends and Killers Pack, the Liars and Cheats Pack and all the Multiplayer Free Roam modes released to date.

There’s no release date for the Red Dead Redemption combined DLC pack yet, but it’ll cost £24.99 and oddly doesn’t even need the original Red Dead Redemption disc to play.

So Train2Game, what are your thoughts on the new details about Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare? Does the new multiplayer mode float your boat? Would you buy the DLC disc?

Rockstar reveal Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare trailer

Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare

Rockstar has released a trailer for Undead Nightmare, the upcoming single player DLC for their smash hit Red Dead Redemption. In short, Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare trailer contains plenty of zombies and it looks good.

The Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare trailer starts with John Marston telling what looks to be his family that “something funny’s going on out there” Then of course all Hell breaks losoe and we have Red Dead Redemptions’ mental grave robber Seth telling us that “The dead are risen” and a plague is turning into “Flesh Eating Crazies” That’s all we know about the plot of Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare for now.

With this being an Undead Nightmare, we of course get to see plenty of zombie action.  The townsfolk of are running scared and it seems that in Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare, John Marston is the only one that can stop the wild western zombie apocalypse.

The trailer also reveals that characters from Red Dead Redemption including, Bonnie McFarlane, Nigel West Dickens and Marshal Johnson will return in Undead Nightmare. The fact that the opening scene of the Undead Nightmare trailer is set in the Marston Range, it’s possible that Undead Nightmare fits into the latter stages of the Red Dead Redemption timeline.

Here’s the Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare trailer in all its zombie glory.

Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare is set to include:

  • New single player missions and challenges
  • 8 new multiplayer zombie characters
  • Zombie animals unleashed into the world
  • New dynamic events
  • Brand new gameplay mechanics
  • Mythical creatures
  • A brand new secret location
  • New weapons
  • New multiplayer modes
  • 3 new outfits: Zombie Hunter, Union Suit, and Legend of the Apocalypse

The Rockstar website says that Red Dead Redemption will be available simultaneously for download via PlayStation®Network ($9.99) and Xbox LIVE® (800 Microsoft Points). There isn’t any release date yet, but we can probably assume that Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare will be available in the run up to Halloween.

Zombies seem to be very much the ‘in’ thing right now, with Call of Duty: Black Ops also set to feature a standalone zombie mode. Meanwhile, Dead Rising 2 has rather very successful, remaining in third place every week since it entered the UK Charts. In fact, Dead Rising 2 entered the top 10 in the same week that Red Dead Redemption finally dropped out of it for the first time since it was released back in May.

Perhaps if zombies aren’t your thing, you can check out the Red Dead Redemption: Liars and Cheats multiplayer DLC. Alternatively, you can watch this video about the making of music for Red Dead Redemption. Of course, it’s likely the same techniques have been used to create atmospheric music for Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare.

So Train2Game, what do you think of the Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare trailer? Is it a clever idea? Will the lure of zombies encourage you to return to the world of Red Dead Redemption? Or do you believe that Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare will ruin the ‘authentic’ western feel of the original game?

Red Dead Redemption Liars and Cheats DLC details

Red Dead Redemption Liars and CheatsRockstar has revealed more information about the new Red Dead Redemption ‘Liars and Cheats’ DLC pack ahead of its release on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live tomorrow.

Liars and Cheats, the penultimate DLC pack for Red Dead Redemption offers something that Rockstar stay is the most fan requested multiplayer feature, Multiplayer horse racing.

The races will support up to eight players in a tournament that consists of three to five races, with players earning points for the position they finish and deciding their final ranking when the cup is over.

Unlike horse racing in Red Dead Redemption’s single player campaign, the multiplayer horse racing introduced in Liars and Cheats lets you shoot at your opponents, but not until after designated brief period of calm at the start of reach race.

However, in order not to make things too easy, and to allow players to actually race, there’s no auto-aim and a limited supply of weapons say Rockstar. If you are killed during a race, you simply re-spawn with a time penalty.  You can see full details about the Multiplayer horse racing set for introduction in Red Dead Redemption: Liars and Cheats here.

Other features set to be introduced in the Red Dead Redemption Cheats and Liars DLC include multiplayer poker and liars dice games, new hang hideouts, new hunting grounds and a new attack and defence game mode, Stronghold. The DLC will also allow players to choose multiplayer skins of a variety of characters from the Red Dead Redemption single player campaign and introduces new achievements.

The Red Dead Redemption Liars and Cheats DLC pack is released on September 21st at a cost of 800 points on Xbox Live, or £7.99 on the PlayStation Network.

Red Dead Redemption is one of the most successful games released this year, and still features in the top ten of the UK chart, despite being released all the way back in May.

So Train2Game, are you still playing Red Dead Redemption at all? If so, would you be tempted to part with your money for new multiplayer content? Or do you think Rockstar are going a bit far and charging too much for the Liars and Cheats expansion pack?

As usual, you can leave your thoughts here on the Train2Game blog, or on the Train2Game forum.

Starcraft II claims Number 1

Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty has launched to top spot of the UK software charts in its debut week. Blizzard’s sequel has been one of the most anticipated PC releases of the year, with hundreds of fans queuing up to be among the first to play the RTS on the early hours of Tuesday morning. Starcraft II has topped the charts through boxed releases alone, and while the long awaited Sci-fi sequel is likely to also have successfully sold in digital form, these downloads are not tracked by Chart-Track.

The Blizzard RTS has bumps Toy Story 3 down to second place, with Rockstar’s Red Dead Redemption still strongly rounding up sales despite dropping to third.  Dance on Broadway and Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4 move down one place each to forth and fifth.

Just Dance climbs two places from eighth to sixth, while Nintendo DS RPG Dragon Quest IX:  Sentinels Starry Skies also moves up two spots from ninth to seventh in its second week of sales.

FPS rivals Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 both re-enter the top ten, climbing from eleventh to eight and twelfth to tenth respectively. Meanwhile Super Mario Galaxy two remains in the top ten, but has dropped from sixth to ninth.

Crackdown 2 has crashed out of the top ten, dropping from tenth to eighteenth, despite holding first place as recently as two weeks ago.

The full top ten for the week ending July 31st is as follows:

1. StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty (Blizzard)
2. Toy Story 3 (Disney)
3. Red Dead Redemption (Rockstar)
4. Dance on Broadway (Ubisoft)
5. LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4 (Warner Bros)
6. Just Dance (Ubisoft)
7. Dragon Quest IX: Sentinels of the Starry Sky (Square Enix)
8. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (Activision Blizzard)
9. Super Mario Galaxy 2 (Nintendo)
10. Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (EA)

So, Train2Game students, will Starcraft II hold onto first place?  Why does Modern Warfare 2 continue to be so popular? And why do you think Crackdown 2 has seen such an undignified drop?

As usual, leave your thoughts here or on the Train2Game forum.

The making of Red Dead Redemption’s music

Here’s something interesting for you dear Train2Game blog readers, Rockstar have released a video describing how they composed and produced authentic music for Read Dead Redemption.  They enlisted musicians to play authentic western style instruments including a Harmonica player with 60 years of experience.

I personally find it interesting when they describe how the music changes depending on player actions. You can check out the video below.

So, what do you think of the video? And how much thought have you Train2Game Designers and Developers put into music for your games? Which game do you think offers the best musical score?

Of course, if music doesn’t take your fancy, you could always watch the F1 2010 Developer Diary that we posted earlier this week. That one may be more up the street of Train2Game Artist & Animators.

As usual, leave your thoughts here or on the Train2Game forums.
