Train2Game News: UK Top 20 Games – 07.10.13

FIFA 14FIFA 14 remains at number one, holding off GTA V for a second week as the gap between the two closes to around 31K units.  GTA V has to settle for second place, but can content itself with the knowledge that after just three weeks on sale it has already eclipsed GTA IV’s lifetime total to become the 12th biggest selling game of all time.  It’s even more impressive in terms of revenue, as GTA V now occupies the number five spot behind 4 Call of Dutys, almost equalling the total of Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Despite 4 new releases in the Top 10 there is still a large sales gap between the Top two and the rest of the chasing pack.  Codemasters/Namco Bandai have this week’s highest new entry with the multi-format F1 2013 debuting one place ahead of Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker which re-appears at number four thanks to an enhanced HD version for Wii U.  The other newcomers are NBA 2K14 at seventh and Just Dance 2014 at nine.  Half the Top 10 this week is made up of sequels to games that were in the Top 10 the same week last year.

Train2Game News: UK Top 20 Games – 23.09.13

GTA VGrand Theft Auto V, unsurprisingly, makes a stunning debut at the top of the Chart this week, breaking all records to become the fastest selling game ever.  With just five days on sale it has become the twenty fourth biggest selling title of all time in the UK.  It has sold more in its first week than the launch weeks of all other GTA titles combined and It’s launch week is 2.4 times greater than that of GTA IV and betters previous best Call of Duty: Black Ops by almost two hundred and fifty thousand units.  It might feel like GTA V was the only new release this week with 89% of all sales being for just that one title, but Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 debuts at number two, while further down the chart at number twenty is Harvest Moon 3D: A New Beginning. Aliens: Colonial Marines has made a return to the charts this week as well thanks to more retailer-promotion.

Train2Game News: Nintendo legend Hiroshi Yamauchi passes away

Hiroshi YamauchiIt’s with a heavy heart I report the death of Nintendo visionary Hiroshi Yamauchi at the age of eighty five.

Mr Yamauchi ran the firm for 53 years, and was its second-largest shareholder at the time of his death. In that time, he took what was a small-time collectable trading card company and built it into one of the most recognisable and successful video games brands today.

Mr Yamauchi took over at Nintendo after his grandfather suffered a stroke. He utilised the work of legendary games designer Shigeru Miyamoto, who had made Donkey Kong, as a way of breaking into the US arcade game market. Mr Miyamoto’s later work was pivotal in the success of Nintendo’s home entertainment systems, titles such as Super Mario, Legend of Zelda and Starfox became commercial smashes and household names.

Mr Yamauchi, one of Japan’s richest men, also used to own the Seattle Mariners major league baseball club before selling it in 2004 to Nintendo’s US-based operation.

The company confirmed the news in an emailed statement. A spokesman said the firm was in mourning over the loss of the former Nintendo president Mr Hiroshi Yamauchi, who sadly passed away this morning. He died of pneumonia at a hospital in central Japan and a funeral will take place on Sunday.

Mr Yamauchi is responsible for shaping the games industry in to what it is today and we thank him for all he did.

Train2Game News: Nintendo 2DS

Nintendo 2DSEarlier this week Nintendo announced a new addition to it’s hand held family. The Nintendo 2DS, the child friendly alternative to the popular 3DS.

The new Nintendo 2DS system gives you all the features of the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo 3DS XL, minus 3D viewing and the price makes the world of Nintendo games even more accessible. The 2DS is compatible with all Nintendo 3DS and most Nintendo DS games; has wireless connectivity for multiplayer and co-op play and has access to the Nintendo eShop, with digital games, free demos, and special offers.

The 2DS has a similar design to the 3DS with the dual screens but it has no hinges. This is to help the console last in the hands of over excited children who may have trouble with the hinges of the 3DS.

It will be available in “White + Red” or “Blue + Black” from 12th October, the same day Pokémon X and Pokémon Y comes out. Nintendo of Europe doesn’t set the price of hardware in the UK, but GAME has set its price as £109.99.

Nintendo of America chief Reggie Fils-Aime said “Nintendo has one of the strongest and most diverse video game lineups in our history,

“Today we’re making those unique Nintendo experiences more accessible and affordable. However you play and whatever you play, Nintendo has you covered.”

You can view an introduction video to the 2DS below:

Train2Game News: UK Top 20 Games – 30.07.13

MinecraftThe games industry charts are a bit later this week as I was away yesterday. The Last Of Us has now been knocked off of the top of the charts and falls to number three. It was knocked off by Minecraft: Xbox360 Edition thanks to a surge in sales for the game. This week Nintendo add two more first party titles, the first being Pikmin 3, which debuts at number two beating it’s predecessor, Pikmin 2, which debuted way back in week 41, 2004 on Gamecube at number thirty two. The other Nintendo release this week is also for Wii U, New Super Luigi U at number thirteen.
