Train2Game News: Grand Theft Auto V breaks several world records

GTA VGrand Theft Auto V has managed to break a total of seven world record all with in a week of the game being launched.

Rockstar North’s epic crime adventure previously earned the Guinness World Record for ‘most viewed trailer for an action-adventure videogame’.

Now its massive first-day sales figures have earned the game a further six awards. The full list of awards now currently held by Grand Theft Auto V are as follows:

  • Best-selling action-adventure videogame in 24 hours
  • Best-selling videogame in 24 hours
  • Fastest entertainment property to gross $1 billion
  • Fastest videogame to gross $1 billion
  • Highest grossing videogame in 24 hours
  • Highest revenue generated by an entertainment product in 24 hours
  • Most viewed trailer for an action-adventure videogame

According to official figures, GTA 5 sold 11.21 million units in its first 24 hours and generated revenue of $815.7 million (£511.8 million), eventually reaching $1 billion (£624.45 million) in sales after just three days.

Sales of the game in the UK led to a 45 per cent year-on-year increase in game sales for September, marking the first time the British games retail sector recorded an increase in spending since December 2008.

A week after its release, Cowen & Company analyst Doug Creutz stated that sales had likely exceeded 15 million worldwide and were predicted to surpass 25 million within the game’s first year of release.

After completing the main story line last night there is no doubt in my mind that it deserves all the attention and accolades it has been getting. I could not recommend this game more.

Train2Game News: UK Top 20 Games – 07.10.13

FIFA 14FIFA 14 remains at number one, holding off GTA V for a second week as the gap between the two closes to around 31K units.  GTA V has to settle for second place, but can content itself with the knowledge that after just three weeks on sale it has already eclipsed GTA IV’s lifetime total to become the 12th biggest selling game of all time.  It’s even more impressive in terms of revenue, as GTA V now occupies the number five spot behind 4 Call of Dutys, almost equalling the total of Call of Duty: Black Ops.

Despite 4 new releases in the Top 10 there is still a large sales gap between the Top two and the rest of the chasing pack.  Codemasters/Namco Bandai have this week’s highest new entry with the multi-format F1 2013 debuting one place ahead of Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker which re-appears at number four thanks to an enhanced HD version for Wii U.  The other newcomers are NBA 2K14 at seventh and Just Dance 2014 at nine.  Half the Top 10 this week is made up of sequels to games that were in the Top 10 the same week last year.

Train2Game News: Coming soon in 2013

DeadpoolAs big as 2012 has been, 2013 has more to come.

The first thing of 2013 to be keeping an eye on will be how well the Wii U does following it’s release and the Christmas rush. Will it be as big a hit as Nintendo hopes or will it fail to reach expectations?

A number of new blockbusters are coming next year with a lot of new sequels. For example 2013 will see the release of Rockstars GTA V and 2Ks Bioshock: Infinite. From what has been released of the games so far they both look stunning and both have been pegged as being big hits.

There are also two reboot games coming out next year. The first being the new Devil May Cry, being developed by the English based Ninja Studios and Tomb Raider being published by Square Enix. I played both games at Eurogamer, Tomb Raiders graphics are truly jaw dropping and Devil May Cry looks to be very action packed with good effects.

A new IP that could be a wild card is Deadpool. The game based on the Marvel Comics star.  The game is being developed by High Moon Studios and is due to be published by Activision in 2013. Regular Deadpool comic writer Daniel Way will pen the script, and Nolan North, who has voiced Deadpool in other media, will reprise his role. This could go either way, this is definitely a wait and see game.

There are a lot of big goings on in 2013 that should lead the gaming industry in to bigger and better things. It’s going to be exciting.

Train2Game News: Mid-week round up – 31.10.11

Possibly the biggest news this week is that Disney has purchased LucasArts for $4.05 billion. In doing so Disney now has the rights to everything in the Star Wars vaults. The plan is to release Star Wars episode VII in a couple of years time. LucasArts also makes some of the games in the Star Wars universe so this could mean changes in future games from the company. We will have to wait and see.

Grand Theft Auto V has finally had a release date confirmed. The highly anticipated fifth part of the saga will be coming to PS3 and Xbox360 in Spring 2013. There has been no mention of a PC release as of yet but it is common for Rockstar to release their PC versions several months later.

Another release date has been announced this time for Peter Molyneux’s Curiosity: What’s inside the cube. The release date has been given as November 7 for iOS and Android. The app will be free to download and play.

One of my most favourite games of this year is Borderlands 2 and it has just surpassed five million sales. The sales include retail and digital sales. Take-Two said it has become “one of the most successful releases in [subsidiary] 2K’s history”. In addition Borderlands Legends has been released for iOS today.

The Call Of Duty: Black Ops 2 trailer hit the world on Monday. The trailer was directed by Guy Ritchie and has a cameo from Robert Downey Jr. You can watch the trailer here.

Kickstarter, the most popular vehicle for crowdfunding games development projects, is now available in the UK. Previously UK-based developers could only pledge, but not create projects, now they can seek funding on the platform.

A sequel to the terrifying Amnesia: Dark Descent has been announced with a creepy trailer to get you in the Halloween spirit. Frictional games have always asked for fans to record screams, whimpers and blood curdling shrieks to be put in to the game. You can email your screams to piggies@thechineseroom.co.uk. The trailer can be seen here.

Lastly in more worrying news the terrible storm, Hurricane Sandy, that has hit the US has knocked out Activisions data centers and shut down online play for a number of games including Call Of Duty and Guitar Hero. My best wishes go out to all those affected by the storm.

Train2Game News: Take-Two not worried about a lack of next-gen consoles at E3

There’s no need to panic if no new console systems are shown off at E3 next week. In fact, an extended life cycle for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 is good for game developers and publishers.

That’s the view of Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick in an interview with MCV.

“There is still ample opportunity in the market with the current generation, provided that you deliver the highest quality entertainment experiences – which we always aim to do,” he said.

“We’re seeing some evidence of an ageing console cycle, which generally is a good thing for a company with very high quality titles, like Take-Two.”

Games coming from Take-Two in the near future include Borderlands 2, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, BioShock Infinite and Grand Theft Auto V, the latter of which doesn’t have a release date as of yet.

“Hardware transitions historically have created both challenges and opportunities for third-party publishers. In order to succeed, it seems to me that any company needs: talent, tech, IP, and a strong balance sheet.” Zelnick continued.

“Take-Two has all four. As always, we’ll need to make triple-A titles that delight consumers. Frankly, our creative folks will be thrilled to have an opportunity to do just that.” he added.

What are your thoughts on the possibility of next-gen consoles not turning up at E3? Do you think their needed yet? Or are developers doing just fine with the current crop?

Train2Game news: GTA V Rockstar’s ‘largest and most ambitious game’ so far

Train2Game students saw the much anticipated Grand Theft Auto 5 trailer revealed yesterday (which can be seen here on the Train2Game blog) and Rockstar have dubbed it their most ambitious game ever.

“Developed by series creator Rockstar North, Grand Theft Auto V heads to the city of Los Santos and surrounding hills, countryside and beaches in the largest and most ambitious game Rockstar has yet created.” said the developer and publisher.

“Grand Theft Auto V is another radical reinvention of the Grand Theft Auto universe,” added Founder of Rockstar Games Sam Houser, “We are incredibly excited to share our new vision with our fans.”

Last month, the Train2Game blog reported that Rockstar’s Dan Houser believes Grand Theft Auto is only beginging to scratch the surface of open world game design.

Rockstar claim Grand Theft Auto V will see “A bold new direction in open-world freedom, storytelling, mission-based gameplay and online multiplayer, which “focuses on the pursuit of the almighty dollar in a re-imagined, present-day Southern California.”

The press release from Rockstar makes no mention of Grand Theft Auto V’s release date or what platforms the title will feature on.

Earlier this year, the Train2Game blog reported that the original Grand Theft Auto was “almost canned” before being saved by a bug. That’s something for Train2Game QA Testers to keep in mind, not all bugs are bad things!

What are your thoughts on the comments from Rockstar about Grand Theft Auto V? Can it live up to the hype? How will they change the game design?
