Train2Game News Urbanimals in Bristol

image

Watershed is delighted to announce the winner of the 2015 international Playable City Award,  Urbanimals, created by the  Laboratory for Architectural Experiments, LAX, based in Poland.

This September and October, a playful pack of wild beasts will appear in unexpected places across the city of Bristol, waiting for people to play with them. Take up the dolphin’s challenge to leap together, chase a shy rabbit down the pavement or skip with a cheeky kangaroo. Lurking behind city walls and hiding in dark corners, Urbanimals are eager to brighten the day. Triggered by people passing or stopping, this magically interactive project will be created using projectors and sensors and will stretch across the whole city.

Richard Roberts, one of the Judging panel, from Jason Bruges Studio said, “It was the fresh response to the brief, and the positive impact that these pieces could make to everyday city journeys that won me over.”

Urbanimals  by LAX was selected from 197 applications received from 60 countries around the world, and the installation will be unveiled in Bristol in September 2015. LAX are an experimental design team based in Poland, who describe themselves as practicing ‘at the edge of architecture’, testing the boundaries of urban planning, design, psychology and computation. They will now work with Watershed producers across the summer in Bristol to explore their ideas, developing the technology to bring their vision to life.

“Bringing people together through play in forgotten areas of the city lies at the heart of what we do”, say Ania and Sebastian from LAX, “with  Urbanimals we want to highlight the city’s hidden value and treasures inspiring residents to consider their environment in new and unexpected ways, we want to stimulate their senses and inject a sense of excitement and wonder into the everyday urban landscape.”

Clare Reddington, Executive Producer of the Award says, “ We are very much looking forward to working with Ania and Sebastian to bring  Urbanimals to life in unexpected and hidden corners of Bristol. We love the combination of imagination and sophistication that the idea offers and were impressed with their ambitious and playful response to the playable city theme.”

Miguel Sicart, play scholar and author of Play Matters (MIT Press)

“Urbanimals helps us rediscover the magic in the city; it gives us a fresh perspective on spaces we might ignore, we might forget, we might despise. Playable cities are instruments to give us back the sense of wonder and situate it in our daily lives.  Urbanimals is a great example of this appropriation of the urban space to remind us of its beauties and mysteries”.

Richard Roberts from Jason Bruges Studio continues,  “Urbanimals is a great piece because it proposes a series of unexpected installations which are delightfully fun and engaging. Its flexibility allows it to be deployed in areas of the city that would benefit from something startling, fresh and new. This proposal allows many levels of interaction from brief encounters by passive observers to active engagement over longer timeframes, and is open to be enjoyed by everyone.”

Train2Game News This Cake Is Not A Lie

image

First ever Gamerbake kicks off at London’s Meltdown bar next Monday, in partnership with Special Effect.

Founded by culinary experts George Osborn and Chris Kerr, Gamerbake is the friendliest cooking themed networking event in the world…and probably the only one at the moment.

The event is simple: a game related theme is announced and attendee bakers must make something vaguely related and bring it along. A panel of judges decide who’s produced the best bake, and there will be some prizes for the winner.

The first ever Gamerbake will take place next Monday (15th June) at 7pm in the Meltdown bar, North London. Jordan Erica Webber, Alan Williamson and Caitlin Goodale will form the judging panel for what promises to be a unique night of cake-fuelled revelry, gaming chit chat, and casual networking.

There is also a huge range of prizes up for grabs including:

• An exclusive, one of a kind Gamerbake apron
• A bundle of indie steam games
• A load of MadCatz goodies from controllers to headphones

As well as these awesome prizes, there’ll be a couple of secret prizes, provided by the kind folks at Ubisoft which will be handed out on the night.

Co-Founder George Osborn said “We have been overwhelmed by the huge amount of support we have had since announcing Gamerbake. I think it is clear that the games industry is full of secret baking experts who were all just waiting for the opportunity to show off their culinary talents. I am really glad that we can give them a stage to show off their sweet treats”

“With Gamerbake, we wanted to take all of the stress and social awkwardness out of networking and create a casual, friendly event for those who just want to meet  likeminded gamers in a fun, relaxing environment. “ Co-Founder Chris Kerr comments “We also really, really wanted an excuse to get a bunch of people together for a night of cake-scoffing, game-playing, chin-wagging mayhem. Given the fact that we’ve now sold out, it looks like that’s an idea everyone can get on board with.”

Train2Game News Data Bank for PS4

image

Nyko Technologies today announced the release of the highly-anticipated Data Bank for PlayStation 4, a hard drive dock that enables users to upgrade their console memory capacity from the PS4’s standard 2.5” hard drive to cheaper, higher-capacity 3.5” hard drives.

“With the Data Bank, we’re offering a solution that expands the console’s functionality and provides gamers with the convenience of extra storage space,” said Nyko director of marketing, Chris Arbogast.

“With downloadable and hard copies of games taking up tens of gigs of storage against the stock 500GB hard drive, we’re facing the tough decision of choosing which game save to delete in favor of playing a new game. Nyko wants to make sure that never has to happen again.”

As the PlayStation 4 does not presently support game installs or save data on external hard drives, the Data Bank enables users to expand their storage beyond the limits of 2.5” drives currently compatible with the console. This ultimately lets users leverage the larger storage, faster running speeds, and lower prices of 3.5” drives.

The Data Bank for PS4 replaces the top of the console and its existing hard drive with a simple single-screw installation, and seamlessly matches the minimalist design of the PlayStation 4. A built-in LED strip illuminates whenever the console is accessing its memory.

To purchase any product from Nyko’s full lineup of video game accessories for all current and previous generation consoles, visit the online store at www.nyko.com.

Train2Game News Talisman character funding SpecialEffect

image

A new character for the million-unit selling Talisman PC and mobile game will be launched on June 10th thanks to a fantastic collaboration between Nomad Games and SpecialEffect, the charity which helps people with physical disabilities enjoy games.

The new Shaman character will be available as DLC from this week and is the result of a competition which Nomad Games launched earlier this year in conjunction with SpecialEffect. Fans of Talisman were invited to submit ideas for characters, with the winner voted by Nomad Games’ enthusiastic community.

US-based Graham Zaretsky was the winner of the fiercely-fought competition, with his ideas then brought to life by three artists and gamers supported by SpecialEffect, namely Amandeep Singh Heer, Ben Clark and Gareth Garratt. The three produced sketches and collages to develop the look and feel of The Shaman.

This week Zaretsky, plus Singh Heer, Clark and Garratt will see her brought to life in the game, with The Shaman available to download for £1.49, with revenue raised from the DLC going to SpecialEffect.

In addition, fans of the PC sku will be given the opportunity to choose what they pay for The Shaman character, with Nomad Games hopeful that its loyal community of Talisman fans will raise even more money for SpecialEffect.

“We’re delighted that The Shaman will finally be available for Talisman,” said Don Whiteford, MD of Nomad Games. “She’s a very special character, given that she’s been created jointly by the Talisman community and SpecialEffect.

“We are blown away by the work that SpecialEffect does to support people with disabilities to play games, and we’re honoured to lend our support to them in terms of raising awareness for this very special charity, but also to support them financially via sales of The Shaman.”

SpecialEffect’s Fund Raiser Nick Streeter added: “We can’t thank everyone at Nomad enough for this brilliantly original way of supporting our work, and for their team to involve some of the people we help in the design process was a magnificent gesture.

“All the staff at SpecialEffect are immensely excited about the launch of the Shaman, and the money raised will go straight into helping more people, whatever their physical disability, to benefit from the magic of video games.”

Graham Zaretsky, who won the competition earlier this year, offered: “I’m deeply honoured that The Shaman was selected to help raise money for SpecialEffect. I love the artwork and that it is exactly in the spirit of the character that I imagined. I hope that it helps raise a lot of money and awareness for the charity.”

Train2Game News Women in creative industries falling

image

The number of women in the digital and creative industries are falling.

Just one quarter (26%) of those working in the digital sector are female, new research shows.

The findings, released today by the UK Commission for Employment and Skills (UKCES), show the proportion of women is down from 33% in 2002 – far below the UK average of 47%.

The shortfall comes at a time where skilled staff are in high demand: the research found there were a higher proportion of vacancies in digital and creative than across the economy as a whole, with high-level roles such as programmers and web developers remaining unfilled.

The industries now face a battle for talent, as projections suggest that 1.2m people will be needed to fill jobs in the sector by 2022.

Karen Price, Director of the Tech Partnership, a network of employers working on digital skills, said:

“The UK is a world leader in the digital and creative industries. Our software development, visual effects and computer games companies are some of the best there are, and we want to keep them that way. That means that we need to make sure talented people fill the jobs that we’ll need to keep growing.

“The news that female entrants to the digital sector are falling is very disappointing. We want to show women and girls that there are great opportunities in the digital sector, and that the rewards are great too.

“It’s key that we influence girls from a young age  and our TechFuture Girls programme aims to get girls of 10 to 14 engaged with computer skills and IT through after-school clubs. In 2022 these girls will be making choices about further study and careers, and making sure they know how important digital skills are is vital.”

The research suggests such a high volume of vacancies cause more than just increased workloads for employees, with 40% of employers reporting that they had lost business due to not being able to fill posts.

More than 2 million people are employed in digital and creative industries, with the sector worth £137bn to the UK annually.

UKCES research also finds jobs within the sector to be highly productive and well paid, with average earnings up to 25% higher than the UK average.

Digital Economy Minister Ed Vaizey said:

“The UK’s Digital and Creative Industries are amongst our biggest success stories, but for them to continue to flourish we must make sure the next generation of talent is being taught, trained and nurtured. Initiatives like TechFuture Girls that encourage young women to consider a career in this dynamic sector will play an important role in addressing this issue.”
