Train2Game News: Ken Levine to be honoured at Golden Joystick Awards

Ken Levine Train2Game blog imageThe Golden Joystick Awards presented by Green Man Gaming have announced that Ken Levine, BioShock Creative Director and Co-Founder of Irrational Games, will be bestowed with a special Lifetime Achievement award at this year’s ceremony.

For the first time in its 31 year history, the Golden Joystick Awards will honour an individual for their lifetime’s work by celebrating Levine’s creative accomplishments ranging from 1999’s System Shock 2 to 2013’s BioShock Infinite.

Recognised as a luminary of the gaming world, Levine led the creation of the five-million-unit-selling, multiple-game-of-the-year-winning BioShock. As the highest-rated first-person-shooter of all time, the masterpiece helped spark the ‘games as art’ debate. Levine’s latest game, BioShock Infinite, released in March this year, has already won 88 awards and has sold more than four million units to date.

Described by legendary film director Guillermo del Toro as ‘one of the best world creators in any of the visual forms’, Levine is also penning a screenplay based on the sci-fi tale Logan’s Run for Warner Bros.

Upon hearing the news, Levine took a moment to contemplate the time he has spent in the industry: “In most fields, people begin their careers being inspired by others. In turn, they hopefully end up inspiring others. The great thing about the still-maturing nature of video games is you get to be inspired by the work of novices and veterans alike. We’re all figuring out day by day exactly what the medium is capable of.”

Tim Clark, Group Senior Editor – Golden Joysticks and Future Games says: “From spaceships infected with extraterrestrial intelligence to the brutal politics of a city beyond the clouds, Ken Levine’s games transport players to new worlds that are as rich as they are dark. Best known for the critically-acclaimed BioShock series, his exploration of player choice and consequence, as well as his dizzying imaginative design work and storytelling, continues to be a huge influence on game makers around the world. As this year’s BioShock Infinite proved, Levine is one of the most interesting creators working in games – and its fitting that he should be the inaugural winner of our Lifetime Achievement award.”

The Golden Joystick Awards are the world’s most popular and credible games awards and celebrate the very best in the gaming industry. Levine was selected for the honour by a group of gaming experts made up from Future’s enviable portfolio of games brands, including CVG, GamesRadar, Official Xbox Magazine, Official PlayStation Magazine, Edge and PC Gamer. The award will be in addition to the 15 fiercely contested gamer-voted categories, including Most Wanted in association with Playfire, Best Gaming Moment in association with Absolute Radio, Best Gaming Platform in association with Digital Spy and The YouTube Gamer Award.

Levine has just wrapped up his work on BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea – Episode 1, the new add-on content pack for BioShock Infinite and is currently working on BioShock Infinite: Burial at Sea – Episode 2, which brings gamers something they have been asking for since they first met the character of Elizabeth: the chance to see the world through her eyes and face challenges as Elizabeth would.

The Golden Joystick Awards will take place at The Westminster Park Plaza on Friday October 25, 2013. For more information on the Golden Joystick Awards, visit http://www.goldenjoystick.com

Train2Game News: Nokia Lumia 2520 Tablet

Nokia Lumia 2520Nokia has announced their very first tablet. The Nokia Lumia 2520 which runs Microsoft’s Windows RT 8.1

The Nokia Lumia 2520 is ideal for life on the move, with high definition 1080p, 10.1-inch screen is made using Gorilla Glass 2 for toughness, and has been made to give less reflection than other tablets in the marketplace, a superior brightness range to see your content in different lighting environments, as well as a wide-viewing angle, for sharing or presenting.

The components, including the Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor, were selected for flawless performance from the touch-screen OS, without soaking up the battery. The system is designed to selectively cut down power consumption when it’s not needed.

While it’s running a full computer operating system, the Lumia 2520’s battery is capable of such feats as playing video for ten hours non-stop without a charge. The battery also offers a quick start with its ultra-fast charging time. It can go from zero to 80 per-cent charged in an hour.

On the back, there’s a high quality 6.7-megapixel camera with ZEISS optics and an f1.9 aperture that delivers great low light performance. This is supported by two new apps from Nokia – Storyteller and Video Director, which will help you make the most of the media you capture and create. On the front, a secondary 2-megapixel camera allows for crystal clear video calls.

The Windows RT 8.1 operating system offers a complete Microsoft Outlook and Office experience, preinstalled, at no extra cost. Also, from Nokia, you’ll find a new version of HERE Maps, making this the first tablet with a true offline mapping capability. There’s also Nokia Music onboard, for free streaming and offline Mixes.

The Nokia Lumia 2520 is estimated to be £399 and be released this quarter but nothing has yet been confirmed.

Train2Game News: New Apple iPad’s

Apple LogoApple has unveiled their new iPad Air and the latest version of its smaller iPad Mini line, both of which sport Apple’s 64-bit A7 processor.

The new iPad Air’s biggest selling point is it a smaller form factor and is about 20 per cent thinner than the fouth generation iPad, but still boasts a 9.7 inch screen. It is one of the lightest tablets in the world at only one pound in weight.

The A7 chip made its debut with the iPhone 5S, and Apple claims it provides “twice the CPU and graphics performance” of the last iPad. The new processor also supports OpenGL ES version 3.0.

Both models also have the same M7 motion coprocessor as the iPhone 5S, which tracks accelerometer, gyroscope, and compass data, and a 2048×1536 resolution retina display. Both new devices also come with an iSight 5 megapixel camera, and run iOS 7.

The iPad Air is due on shelves November 1st at a $399-to-$699 price tag. The iPad mini should follow later in the month for $529. Apple have also dropped the price of the current iPad mini to $299.

Train2Game News: Batman: Arkham Origins TV Spot

Batman Arkham OriginsWith just a few days until the launch of Batman: Arkham Origins, today Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment unveiled the game’s TV spot.

The emotional piece depicts the transformation from Bruce Wayne’s dark childhood to his position as the feared crime-fighting hero. It is a short clip but it shows a lot of character in Bruce Wayne and it certainly has me excited for the new game!

You can view the TV spot below

Batman: Arkham Origins is based on DC Comics’ core Batman license and features an expanded Gotham City and introduces an original prequel storyline set several years before the events of Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City.  Taking place before the rise of Gotham City’s most dangerous criminals, the game showcases a young and unrefined Batman as he faces a defining moment in his early career as a crime fighter that sets his path to becoming the Dark Knight. As the story unfolds, players will meet many important characters for the first time and forge key relationships.

The games will release on all platforms worldwide beginning Oct 25, 2013.  Batman: Arkham Origins free-to-play mobile game is available now in the Apple App Store for iPad, iPhone and iPod.

Train2Game News: Video game pioneers book

BookCoverHewson Consultants Ltd has announced its upcoming Kickstarter campaign for a new book entitled Hints & Tips for Video game Pioneers.

The book’s author, Andrew Hewson, was the founder of Hewson Consultants (Uridium, Paradroid, Nebulus), 21st Century Entertainment (Pinball Dreams, Pinball Fantasies) and the founding Chairman of United Kingdom trade body ELSPA (now known as UKIE).

The book will feature contributions from numerous industry icons, including Steve Turner, Nick Jones, Oliver Frey, Andreas Axelsson, Roger Kean, Stewart Gilray, and many more. What’s more, Kickstarter backers will have the opportunity to contribute to the book in a number of unique ways, including a backer’s interview section.

“When I started in the games industry with a ZX80 and a typewriter, it was an era of open platforms and cutting edge innovation,” Said Andrew Hewson, Founder of Hewson Consultants. He continued, “Today, thanks to digital distribution and the re-emergence of open platforms, we are returning to the kind of industry in which small creative teams can flourish. This book is an opportunity for me to share my experiences from two decades at the cutting edge of gaming with the industry pioneers of tomorrow.”

Hewson Consultants and 21st Century Entertainment forged reputations for releasing some of the most innovative and high quality titles of their era by discovering and fostering development legends like Raffaele Cecco (Exolon, Cybernoid), Andrew Braybrook (Uridium, Paradroid), John Phillips (Nebulus), Steve Turner (Avalon, Quazatron), Dominic Robinson (Zynaps) and the founders of DICE who launched their first games, Pinball Dreams and Pinball Fantasies, through 21st Century Entertainment.

Hints and Tips for Video game Pioneers is about more than just the history of Hewson Consultants and 21st Century Entertainment, and it’s about more than just the games. It’s a book which digs beneath the surface to examine the forces which made those companies such prolific hit-producers, unearthing a rich tapestry of expertise for the new generation of bedroom coders. It’s a story of triumph and disaster, ecstasy and turmoil and perpetual market forces in an industry which is constantly reinventing itself.

This book would be a good read for any Train2Game students as it will be full of valuable information.

Train2Game News: Train2Game Radio interviews Lauren Black

Lauren BlackI had the pleasure of interviewing Train2Game Development student Lauren Black last week. She told me how she got involved with Train2Game and the comic book she is working on, Sacred Wing.

The comic is an an 8 part story detailing specific points in the history of the universe, each point in time thrusts  a number of separate races into a situation that’s bigger than any of them.

You can find out more and keep up to date at www.SacredWing.com or www.bothersome.co.uk

You can hear the interview with Lauren here: https://audioboo.fm/boos/1675961-train2game-student-lauren-black-talks-to-t2g-radio

Or read the transcript below:

Hello there, my name is Lauren Black, I’m on the developer course and I’m from Middlesbrough.

Hi Lauren, how you doing?

I’m not too bad thanks, how are you?

I’m alright cheers. So tell me a bit about yourself?

Basically, I’ve just been working in the web development industry for quite a while now and a couple of years ago I decided that I’d had enough of that and that the game industry was the way to go for me.

So what did you do in the web industry before?

I did a lot of free lancing. I’d get a contract in now and then, they’d ask me to do a bit of security tightening, you know the odd bits and bobs. Every now and again I’d get a bigger contract to do something, it was just random bits and pieces.

So are you just primarily creating games now instead are you?

Instead yeah. I kind of figured that games would be a lot more interesting. I got this little letter through the door one day saying Train2Game so I thought, hey, i’ll go for that!

Excellent and are you happy with your choice?

Very much so! I’ve only do about half way through part two. I had to take a little break due to illness but I’ve learned a hell of a lot of it and it’s helped with the web side of things as well because it’s a transferable skill. The skills that you learn from the course can be used in other industries as well, so it doesn’t just lock you into games, it can help with a lot of other things as well.

Yeah? Have you been working on anything lately that you’ve been using your Train2Game course for?

Yeah! It’s helped me make a load of contacts in the industry. I worked a while back for a company called Iguana and they seemed to like me. Again that was around the time I got ill so I had to cut that short unfortunately. Like I say though, yeah I’ve made a load of contacts in the industry who have been helping me with this current project I’ve been working on called Sacred Wing. At the minute we are deciding to start from a comic book and we are going to be building a game a bit later on. So it’s a bit backwards from what other people are doing who are on the course who develop a game straight away but at the minute we are creating a comic to generate a bit of a fan base and then eventually we’ll be building a game on top of that.

Brilliant idea I reckon. I reckon it should do quite well!

Well I hope so!

So with the comic are you publishing it yourself or are you putting out on the internet? How do you want it to work?

It’s a bit of both really! We are putting it out on the internet for free first and then if we get a lot of hits and enough donations, because we are on a shoe string budget at the minute, so if we get a lot of interest then we will be doing a hard copy published which I’ll be publishing myself or perhaps even through a professional publisher. We’ll have to see.

What is the comic about?

What is it about? Now that’s a very good question because there’s a lot of things I don’t want to give away this early!

Ah right. I understand it’s a Sci Fi one isn’t it?

It’s a science fiction, it’s got a bit of fantasy in there, it’s got a bit of steam punk, you know all these elements that I’m hoping to bring out later on in the project. It’s very hard to see what’s there at the precise moment ’cause it’s very early on but hopefully there’s a lot of surprises that I can give to people.

Is there somewhere people can keep up to date with the bits that come out and stuff, have you got a website or a Facebook?

Absolutely! We’re available on www.SacredWing.com and also my personal blog www.bothersome.co.uk

Perfect! Well I’ll look forward to everything that’s coming out with that and I’m sure we will talk again soon.

I hope so. Thank you very much!
