DestinyActivision Publishing, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, Inc announced that the company sold more than $500 million of Destiny into retail stores and first parties worldwide as of day one, making the game the biggest new video game franchise launch in history.

“Based on extraordinary audience demand, retail and first party orders worldwide have exceeded $500 million for Destiny,” said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard. “This industry milestone marks another blockbuster success for our company and demonstrates our unique ability to create some of the most successful entertainment franchises in the world. The success of Destiny, along with the recent introduction of Blizzard Entertainment’s Hearthstone, is further validation of our unique capabilities to create great entertainment franchises from the ground up.”

Destiny launched at over 11,000 midnight openings around the world, as fans in over 178 countries (Source: Radian6) shared their fervour on YouTube and in social media.

“Since the beginning, we’ve been confident that our investment and belief in Destiny would pay off. But not many people believed we’d be able to say it did so on day one,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing. “Destiny is officially the biggest new franchise launch in our industry’s history. It’s also the highest-selling day one digital console release in history. We have more confidence than ever that Destiny will become one of the iconic franchises of this generation and Activision’s next billion dollar brand. Most importantly, it’s just a great game which we can’t stop playing. A big thanks to our incredibly talented team and partners who helped make this happen; most importantly, our partners at Bungie.”

Train2Game News Destiny Fragrance

Destiny FragranceYou may have seen the new advert showing Destiny as a perfume going around the internet lately. It has emerged Microsoft UK are behind the amusing advertising.

If you head to www.DestinyFragrance.com you’ll be greeted by an advert for “the new fragrance by Xbox”. Click through to the next page and the truth is revealed.

“Okay, so here’s the lowdown. Destiny is actually an epic new first-person shooter, available on Xbox,” the site’s text reads. “Thing is, we didn’t have permission to run adverts for the game. So we didn’t. Thanks for smelling that something was up. Now get the game and become a legend.”

A following page then leads to various Xbox One and Destiny bundles available at third-party retailers, including GAME, Tesco and Amazon.co.uk.

Sony has a close relationship with publisher Activision for the game, which has seen Destiny heavily featured alongside PlayStation 4 in marketing. The game’s PlayStation versions will also get a selection of timed-exclusive content.

A Microsoft UK spokesperson confirmed to Eurogamer that the Destiny Fragrance site was indeed “legitimate”.

Train2Game News Destiny Beta massive success

DestinyActivision Publishing, Inc. and Bungie, today confirmed millions of people have played their upcoming and award-winning game Destiny during their beta test to gather vital information in preparation for launch.

The Destiny Beta included a sampling of major activities featured in the full game. The beta began first on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3 on July 17 and came to a close Sunday evening, with 4,638,937 unique players participating.

“This is the biggest beta of this console generation by a wide margin and the largest console beta ever for a new video game IP to date,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing. “Hosting a beta at this scale is an incredible feat, so we’re thrilled to see the phenomenal response. But the beta is just a taste of what’s to come. We’re counting down the days to our launch day, September 9th.”

“We were totally blown away by the number of people who played the beta,” said Pete Parsons, COO of Bungie. “We surpassed even our own goals and the feedback was invaluable. We cannot thank the community enough, the response was humbling and in the weeks ahead we’ll be working hard to ensure that Destiny lives up to the expectations at launch.”

I got the pleasure of trying the beta myself on the Xbox One and I was blown away by the game. It was much more than I was expecting and will hopefully be a day one purchase for myself.

Train2Game News Destiny Beta now open to all

DestinyAfter initially requiring a beta code for access, Bungie is opening up the Destiny beta to all gamers on Xbox One, Xbox 360, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 3.

Starting today at 4 PM PDT, everyone will be free to play the ongoing beta. The only requirement will be an Xbox Live Gold or PlayStation Plus subscription, depending upon your console of choice. To start playing, check out the dashboard or store on your system for a link to download the beta.

This will ensure everyone who wants to try Destiny has the opportunity to do so before the beta comes to an end on Sunday night. It should also make it easier for those with more than one console to decide which system they want to play the game on when it launches on September 9. But remember, the Xbox One beta doesn’t run at 1080p, but the final game is expected to.

Bungie has had a number of surprises for beta testers since the beta began last week. Before today’s announcement, it offered a limited time Iron Banner event over the weekend and then brought the beta back online early after scheduled maintenance. And, as previously announced, players who sign into the game anytime between 2 PM PDT on Saturday and the end of the beta will receive an exclusive emblem for use in the full game.

After being a pre-order bonus, some of those who have already purchased the game are feeling betrayed by Bungie for allowing the bonus to be used by everyone.

Remember the Beta ends this Sunday for those who want to take part.

Train2Game News: Young Modder fulfils his Destiny

Alexander J. VelickyA young modder spent a year developing his mod for Skyrim just so that Bethesda would notice him and his hard work has paid off. He now has a job… at Bungie!

19 year-old burgeoning game developer, Alexander J. Velicky, created a mod for Skyrim called Falskaar that took him a year to develop. There’s over 25 hours of new gameplay to be found in Falskaar, with an entirely new land roughly a third the size of Skyrim’s Tamriel, new characters, dozens of new quests, new voice acting and even an original soundtrack.

Thanks to all his hard work and commitment he is now an associate designer for the people who bought you the Halo franchise, Bungie.

In a post on the Elder Scrolls forum, Velicky thanked the community for their support of his mods over the years.

“Modding has been 90% of my life for over four years now, and all throughout you were there to support me,” he said.

“From the bottom of my heart I want to thank every person who ever provided feedback on a mod, support, help, or something as simple as a ‘cant wait!’ or ‘great job.’ Every single one of you made this possible. From driving me to work throughout development, to providing astounding amounts of feedback and support to help learn and improve after releases. I owe it to all of you.

He also encourage fellow aspiring developers to chase their dreams: “Never be afraid to try”.

“I set my sights on a professional design job pretty early, I lowered my head, charged forward, and rarely looked back. Of course, I ensured what I was doing had a reasonable chance for success from time to time. But the most surprising of all, is who I’ve ended up with. I applied to many companies, and Bungie was in my, “Huge company that will completely ignore me.” category.

“Well, they didn’t and look what it got me. Bungie is an awesome company with an amazing team, and I’m very lucky that they’ve decided to give me a chance! Never be afraid to try. I spent the time it took to apply and the rewards are proving to be greater than I could have possible imagined.”

Alexander is an inspiration to all those wanting to get in to the games industry. He worked incredibly hard and is now most likely going to be working on the highly anticipated Sci-Fi adventure, Destiny.

A huge congratulations Alexander!
