Train2Game News: UK Top 20 Games – 23.09.13

GTA VGrand Theft Auto V, unsurprisingly, makes a stunning debut at the top of the Chart this week, breaking all records to become the fastest selling game ever.  With just five days on sale it has become the twenty fourth biggest selling title of all time in the UK.  It has sold more in its first week than the launch weeks of all other GTA titles combined and It’s launch week is 2.4 times greater than that of GTA IV and betters previous best Call of Duty: Black Ops by almost two hundred and fifty thousand units.  It might feel like GTA V was the only new release this week with 89% of all sales being for just that one title, but Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 debuts at number two, while further down the chart at number twenty is Harvest Moon 3D: A New Beginning. Aliens: Colonial Marines has made a return to the charts this week as well thanks to more retailer-promotion.

Train2Game News: GTA V part of British culture?

GTA VThe BBC has covered the story of GTA V being released and has said that it could be one of the greatest exports from England.

As the latest instalment of the super-violent series hits the shelves around the world, many are taking a step back and assessing the cultural impact of a title that has changed not only the games industry, but perhaps even the entertainment business as a whole.

A shocking fact about the GTA series you may not realise is that even before today’s release of Grand Theft Auto 5, the GTA series has already sold more games than The Who have sold records. That is a mind blowing fact and shows how big this series really is. Across the world, the franchise has shifted more than 135 million units since its 1997 debut.

In the years since its release, the series would be named by the Guinness Book of Records as the most controversial video game in history – an accolade based mostly on the number of column inches dedicated to the series but had the game simply been about violence, it would not have stood the test of time, argues Brian Baglow, a writer on the first title in the series.

“The games sector had always been very good at blowing stuff up – creating more realistic bullet holes – but they had no real cultural relevance. GTA on the other hand, as it’s been set in a contemporary environment, has acted like a black mirror set up against society.”

In GTA5, for example, that mirror lashes out at many aspects of today’s popular culture, taking on foes including TV talent shows and social networking – a less-than-subtle dig at Facebook comes in the shape of “Lifeinvader”. Lifeinvader’s strapline, if the point needed pushing home further, is: “Where your personal information becomes a marketing profile (that we can sell).”

All the games – bar an early London-based spin-off – are set in the USA but crucial to the series’ success is that the world the characters inhabit is peppered with a distinctly British outlook, argues Mr Baglow.

“What GTA does is it actually take the American culture as we understand it from movies – it’s every gangster movie, it’s every crime caper. It uses that, but keeps it very grounded with a British sensibility.

“This is a very large part of the influence of Rockstar North, based in Edinburgh – there’s a tongue-in-cheek streak running throughout. That’s something that people tend to miss.”

The fifth instalment is forecast to sell in the region of 25 million copies within the first 12 months of its release but whether the series will be held up in the future as a prime example of British creative culture is still open to much debate.

Train2Game News: musicMagpie competition

Train2Game News: Coming soon in 2013

DeadpoolAs big as 2012 has been, 2013 has more to come.

The first thing of 2013 to be keeping an eye on will be how well the Wii U does following it’s release and the Christmas rush. Will it be as big a hit as Nintendo hopes or will it fail to reach expectations?

A number of new blockbusters are coming next year with a lot of new sequels. For example 2013 will see the release of Rockstars GTA V and 2Ks Bioshock: Infinite. From what has been released of the games so far they both look stunning and both have been pegged as being big hits.

There are also two reboot games coming out next year. The first being the new Devil May Cry, being developed by the English based Ninja Studios and Tomb Raider being published by Square Enix. I played both games at Eurogamer, Tomb Raiders graphics are truly jaw dropping and Devil May Cry looks to be very action packed with good effects.

A new IP that could be a wild card is Deadpool. The game based on the Marvel Comics star.  The game is being developed by High Moon Studios and is due to be published by Activision in 2013. Regular Deadpool comic writer Daniel Way will pen the script, and Nolan North, who has voiced Deadpool in other media, will reprise his role. This could go either way, this is definitely a wait and see game.

There are a lot of big goings on in 2013 that should lead the gaming industry in to bigger and better things. It’s going to be exciting.

Train2Game News: Mid-week round up – 31.10.11

Possibly the biggest news this week is that Disney has purchased LucasArts for $4.05 billion. In doing so Disney now has the rights to everything in the Star Wars vaults. The plan is to release Star Wars episode VII in a couple of years time. LucasArts also makes some of the games in the Star Wars universe so this could mean changes in future games from the company. We will have to wait and see.

Grand Theft Auto V has finally had a release date confirmed. The highly anticipated fifth part of the saga will be coming to PS3 and Xbox360 in Spring 2013. There has been no mention of a PC release as of yet but it is common for Rockstar to release their PC versions several months later.

Another release date has been announced this time for Peter Molyneux’s Curiosity: What’s inside the cube. The release date has been given as November 7 for iOS and Android. The app will be free to download and play.

One of my most favourite games of this year is Borderlands 2 and it has just surpassed five million sales. The sales include retail and digital sales. Take-Two said it has become “one of the most successful releases in [subsidiary] 2K’s history”. In addition Borderlands Legends has been released for iOS today.

The Call Of Duty: Black Ops 2 trailer hit the world on Monday. The trailer was directed by Guy Ritchie and has a cameo from Robert Downey Jr. You can watch the trailer here.

Kickstarter, the most popular vehicle for crowdfunding games development projects, is now available in the UK. Previously UK-based developers could only pledge, but not create projects, now they can seek funding on the platform.

A sequel to the terrifying Amnesia: Dark Descent has been announced with a creepy trailer to get you in the Halloween spirit. Frictional games have always asked for fans to record screams, whimpers and blood curdling shrieks to be put in to the game. You can email your screams to piggies@thechineseroom.co.uk. The trailer can be seen here.

Lastly in more worrying news the terrible storm, Hurricane Sandy, that has hit the US has knocked out Activisions data centers and shut down online play for a number of games including Call Of Duty and Guitar Hero. My best wishes go out to all those affected by the storm.

Train2Game news: Rockstar show extensive research behind development of Max Payne 3

Train2Game students should find this interesting, Rockstar Games have given us a behind the scenes look at the development of Max Payne 3.

The first in what Rockstar say will be a series of posts looks at the work going into research for the development of Max Payne 3, with developers going to visit various locations around the game’s setting of São Paulo.

“Gathering assets to help accurately inform and create faithful game level environments set in São Paulo, Rockstar game developers and designers took several trips to the area to extensively document everything from the glamour and exclusivity of posh spots like Avenida MorumbiAvenida Paulista and the Jardins district, to harsh high-crime locales like Favela Japiaçu (Favela do Nove) and the infamous Edificio São Vito (aka Treme Treme or the Vertical Favela).” said the post from Rockstar.

“Thousands of pictures were taken for mood and texture, local fashions and outfits were scanned for reference, and a diverse array of Paulistanos from all walks of life — from bossa nova singers to jujitsu champions to favela gang members — were consulted and interviewed to provide thorough background on the dazzling and dangerous world in which the game is set.”

Train2Game students can feel the post in full, here on the Rockstar Newswire. You can also find out more about the development of Max Payne 3 here on The Train2Game Blog.

And stay tuned to The Train2Game Blog for all the latest Rockstar news.

So Train2Game, what are your thoughts about the effort going into researching Max Payne 3? How important do you feel good research is to the game development process?

Train2Game news: L.A. Noire development took 7 years because it was “too big” says creator Brendan McNamara

L.A. Noire Cole Phelps Train2Game blog imageTrain2Game students will know that game development can take a significant amount of time, but even in this industry, L.A. Noire’s seven year development cycle was extensive. (Though only half as long as that of Duke Nukem Forever…)

Why was this? Well, partly because of the impressive Motionscan facial animation, and also because L.A. Noire creator Brendan McNamara believes his film noire title, published by Rockstar, was “too big”

“One [thing] is the size, it’s a huge game – probably too big. The map’s massive, and so that’s probably my fault. We had to build a new process to do that” he told OPM

“We were a brand-new studio – we had brand-new tools, new technology. We have tools that allow you to build cities now, but we had to build that kind of stuff and make it work. Everything from the road network, where all the trolley cars go, all the cables connecting automatically to all of the buildings…”

McNamara revealed that at least 18 months of L.A. Noire’s development was dedicated to research.

“The tech was pretty extensive, including MotionScan. I’d say the first year and a half – [maybe] even longer – was just research.” he said

“Newspaper research, guys going over to LA and doing research on the buildings, taking photos, getting all the resources together… We were quite a small studio – 16 people or something – and we had to have all this material so we could start building stuff.” McNamara concluded

Facial animation was a huge part of L.A. Noire, however, in an interview with the Train2Game blog last November, Brink Lead Writer Ed Stern told us it isn’t something that’s needed in order to enjoy video games.

As previously reported by the Train2Game blog, L.A. Noire broke records to take No.1 in the UK charts when it was released last year.

For more on L.A. Noire, see previous posts on The Train2Game Blog.

So Train2Game, what do you make of McNamara’s comments? Is it possible for a game to be too big? What lessons do you thinkcan be learned from the development of L.A. Noire?

Train2Game news: GTA V Rockstar’s ‘largest and most ambitious game’ so far

Train2Game students saw the much anticipated Grand Theft Auto 5 trailer revealed yesterday (which can be seen here on the Train2Game blog) and Rockstar have dubbed it their most ambitious game ever.

“Developed by series creator Rockstar North, Grand Theft Auto V heads to the city of Los Santos and surrounding hills, countryside and beaches in the largest and most ambitious game Rockstar has yet created.” said the developer and publisher.

“Grand Theft Auto V is another radical reinvention of the Grand Theft Auto universe,” added Founder of Rockstar Games Sam Houser, “We are incredibly excited to share our new vision with our fans.”

Last month, the Train2Game blog reported that Rockstar’s Dan Houser believes Grand Theft Auto is only beginging to scratch the surface of open world game design.

Rockstar claim Grand Theft Auto V will see “A bold new direction in open-world freedom, storytelling, mission-based gameplay and online multiplayer, which “focuses on the pursuit of the almighty dollar in a re-imagined, present-day Southern California.”

The press release from Rockstar makes no mention of Grand Theft Auto V’s release date or what platforms the title will feature on.

Earlier this year, the Train2Game blog reported that the original Grand Theft Auto was “almost canned” before being saved by a bug. That’s something for Train2Game QA Testers to keep in mind, not all bugs are bad things!

What are your thoughts on the comments from Rockstar about Grand Theft Auto V? Can it live up to the hype? How will they change the game design?
