It is great to be working once again with Ukie and Staffs University to help support the conference and build the talent of the future.”

Train2Game News Student looking to swap the broom for the paintbrush

Michael Bird is a supervisor at an industrial cleaning firm but his dream is to ditch the cleaning and move into creating art in videogames

Since finishing the Art and Animation course with Train2Game Michael – who is 41 and lives in Kettering – has been on the hunt for a job in games but not had any luck so far. He firmly believes that given the first chance at a studio, he could develop into a great asset for any company.

Michael is from a family of artists, his father is a traditional artist and his mother is a colourist. Michael trained in sculpture and art before moving into video games.

He had a really positive experience with Train2Game and now wants to go professional. He’s now contributing to student studios and also created his own website to show off his work.

‘My name is Michael Bird I am an Artist, Animator. I have spent the last five years or so dedicating my creativeness to the gaming world with the dream of one day being able to work within a gaming studio and help make the games that are yet to come.’

‘I finished my Train2Game course in May last year. I would say that the overall experience with Train2Game was good; they always tried their best to help me with any issues or problem that I may have had. They wouldn’t tell me how to do it instead they would guide me in the right direction so you would end up learning what I needed to know myself, in truth I saw this as a better way to find the solution to whatever it was that I needed help with.’

‘I got into gaming art as a sort of natural progression to being a traditional artist as in using pencil, paints and clay. All my life I have been playing video games, from the modern masterpieces of today right the way back to the originals like Pong and Pac-Man, and everything in-between. It has always plagued my mind as to how it was done; those images that you see on the screen that excite the eye and make you want to play more. How do they do it, how I would love to find out and maybe see if I could do the same. It wasn’t until I got the flyer from Train2Game that I saw my chance to follow the dream of learning how to make what I had seen on the screen. So the opportunity that was presented was taken and I ran with it to a new horizon that has beckoned me for so long.’

‘Working with sculpture,  I think that it has helped me immensely as most of the time with gaming art you have to think in three dimensions as you would do when you sculpt. You get to understand movement, structure and how something should look from all sides. It’s like a 360 degree canvas where every point has to look right from every angle. So really what I create within a computer is just a digital version of what I would create in clay.’

‘To create something out of nothing never gets old to me be it stills or animation, they are both as exciting as each other. If a had to choose then it would have to be stills. More to the point of the environment and the props that populate it is it internal or external. . To create a beautiful game you need to create a beautiful environment to play that game in. You could create the best most iconic character in the world with the most stunning and realistic animation ever but if the gaming environment they live in isn’t believable then it will never work.’

‘Both my parents are artists in their own right. My father is a traditional artist where as my mother is more of a colourist. At first they thought I wasn’t serious but as time progressed they began to see that this was something that I craved with every ounce of my being. Sometimes they would say I should get a proper boring job and forget my dream but it never deterred me from this path to my true calling.’

‘I would love to say that my art is my job but unfortunately that is not the case yet. Despite the constant application for art positions within the gaming industry I have so far been unsuccessful in my efforts. All I want and need is that one person to take that chance on me. In the meantime bills have to be paid so I am a supervisor for an industrial cleaning company, but when I’m not working there I’m always creating pieces for my website michaelbird74.com it’s there to showcase my work for any potential employers.’

‘The last piece that I have only just finished was a Private Detective’s Office set in the style of 30’s America. It was more a case of being able to show that can create an interior set piece and fill it with relevant props and create the right mood with the lighting and textures. Since then I have two projects that will be starting on, one will be a Deep Forest Ruins scene and the other will be a Derelict Lighthouse. I haven’t decided which one I will start first so you will just have to wait and see by checking out the Work in Progress on my website.’

‘I think that Train2Game has taught me apart from the skills that I will need to fulfil my dreams, something that I will never stop learning as you can never know everything. Also I would say that they taught me to never give up no matter how hard and stressful it can get, there’s always a way to figure something out and make it better than you thought which in turn makes you better at what you do.’

‘What can I offer a professional studio? That is a difficult question as I could just put the usual things like my skills, my passion for gaming and so forth. In truth all I can offer is myself and what I have learnt from my life experience. How I see the world around me, how I have played so many games in my lifetime that they have all influenced the way I create my art, I have seen how the industry has grown and developed over the years to give me the foundation that has helped me to the stage that I am now. I have followed the way gaming itself has changed with the technology and it has made me realise that I can create anything and everything that I ever thought possible within a game as well as some that I could never have dreamed of. Just to have that power at my fingertips fills me with excitement and a driven determination to be the best gaming artist I can be. That’s what I can offer a professional studio, sounds a bit cheesy I know but it’s the best way I can describe it.’

‘In truth there is no one studio that I would like to work for or with, for me it’s all about creating beautiful game art, be it for a mobile, handheld or a AAA title. When I’m playing a game all I can think about is I really want to be the guy who build that, the guy who will spend hour after hour to get it looking and acting right so it fit the game. I often study the screen to figure out how they did it and see how I would go about creating it.’

‘I would say that my long term aims are to keep creating more and more stunning work, to learn new skills and improve what I already have, To maybe end up being a senior artist within a studio, that would be nice but for a start I just want to get my foot through the door and then see where it takes me. I will never stop doing what I love doing at the end of the day I’m an artist and the desire to create, build, sculpt, paint and draw will only die when I do. Being a videogame artist is where I see myself and I will do everything I possibly can to get there.’

Train2Game News Interview with resident Iron Man

image

In recent weeks Train2Game has been documenting Sheldon Gilman’s pursuit to create the ultimate Iron Man suit.

He’s working on a collection of costumes and hopes to create a pair of Iron Man costumes for next year’s MCM Expo.

This week Train2Game caught up with Sheldon to hear more about the man inside the costume, including his professional and personal ambitions.

Please tell us about yourself?
“My name is Sheldon Gilman, I am 35 and currently live in a small village called Redbourn in Hertfordshire with my wife and one year old daughter. I was originally born in Jamaica and moved to England with my parents when I was six months old. We lived in south London till I was seven then moved to Luton and now I live in Redbourn with my Wife and daughter.”

“I should also mention it was my very patient, loving and understanding wife who initially got me interested in cosplay and is constantly having to dodge Iron Man parts and tools that are all over the living room.”

What cosplay does your wife enjoy, do you have photos of you both in cosplay?
I haven’t quite convinced Parveen to dress up yet but that’s soon to change as she’s told me she “MAY” consider dressing as Pocahontas next May.

What is your regular job?
“I work in the IT department at Aldwyck Housing Group. A housing association.”

How much does the suit cost to create?
“Well I’ve never kept an accurate tally of how much it cost but my last suit was in the region of £200. This current suit, so far has cost me around £400 – £450 and there’s still more things I need to buy like electronics components and paint. However, when it’s completed, I expect it to have cost me £700 – £800.”

Would you ever sell a suit and if so, how much would one cost to buy?
“I definitely would sell my suits. I’d sell them in whole or in part (i.e. just the helmet) Prices would depend on detail. For a raw suit in foam, no paint, animatronics or electronics I’d say around £600 for a fibreglass suit all painted with full animatronics and electronics £1500.”

When will your latest suit be finished?
“I have set my finish date for May next year because I want both the Iron man Mk 20 and the War Machine to be completed for the MCM Expo in London where myself and a few others visit twice a year.”

Do you have a photo in the suit you at MCM Expo last year?
“I attached a pic of me with Rob Ledsom at MCM a few years back. I have to admit I haven’t worn this suit to MCM Expo time. I have also attached a pic of me in my Assassins Creed/ Jango Fett mash-up Costume.”

What does your daughter understand of what you are doing?
“My Daughter Inara is very curious little monkey and likes to be involved in whatever everyone else is doing. My friends at Armour up have made her first costume to wear at her fancy dress party later this month.”

image

What do you have planned in the future?
“I plan on getting a large shed built in my back garden this summer so I can create more costumes. I have many in mind like Sam Wilson aka The Falcon from Captain America – The winter Soldier, Heimdall from Thor, Batman – Arkham Knight Armour, Jager Pilot Suits from Pacific Rim and some crossovers too like Iron C3PO and Iron Tron. I will most definitely need help with some of these so I will be working with my younger brother and a very good friend of mine who is starting her own company called Armour Up.”

Would you see costume design as a future career?
“Very much so! The course I’m doing is useful, in that it’s showing me design techniques that speed up my design process greatly. However, as I am pretty much a one-man-band, production would be slow. I’m currently working on Iron Man mark 20 and War Machine simultaneously, and hope to have them finished by May 2016. I also have a Heimdall costume to make by May 2016 so I’m already a very busy bee.”

Which course are you studying with Train2Game?
“I am studying Games Artist and Animator.”

How are you finding the Train2Game course?
“The course is great! I actually started learning 3D animation on my own, watching YouTube videos and playing about with the different options in 3DS max but I thought it was time I got a qualification in the industry. The flexibility of the course has allowed me to continue working full-time, take care of my daughter all whilst studying to change to a career that I’d love.”

What are your thoughts on T2G?
“Train2Game have been a godsend. Courses of this type are very hard to find, As I work full time to support my family, I cannot afford to take three years out to get a bachelor’s degree from a normal university and no other university in this country has a program where you can study 3D animation totally from home, in your own time and get a portfolio as well as a recognised qualification out of it.”

Can you tell me more about your friend’s venture, Armour Up, and how you will be involved?
“I am getting James and Serena to write a few lines about what they do for you, but just briefly, they are both cosplayers. Alongside Serena’s regular job, she is an awesome seamstress and is very good at making period clothing. James and I both work for the same housing association but he is also a part time actor.”

“At the moment we’re just exchanging creative and business ideas and sharing expertise as I know nothing when it comes to cloth and Serena is eager to learn how to use the harder materials. James is the brains behind the operations and has good business head on his shoulders. He’s almost finished putting the Armour Up website together. I’ll update with more shortly.”

Further details of Sheldon’s project will follow on the Train2Game blog

Train2Game News Student creating Iron Man Suit

image

Train2Game student Sheldon Gilman is a huge fan of Iron Man and he’s decided to make it his mission to create the ultimate replica Iron Man suit.

Sheldon has kindly agreed to document his build and has agreed to document his suit creation journey in a series of Train2Game blogs entries. This is Sheldon’s second attempt at the ultimate suit.

In this first blog piece Sheldon gives some detail of what he’s working on and what he’s created in the past. As you will find out, he’s got some pretty grand plans for his second design.

“About two years ago, I had the idea to make a wearable Iron Man suit for Comic-Con. I had lots of fun building it and decided I wanted to do it again with some major improvements as my first attempt was very basic.”

“My first suit I made was the Mark 7. It was made out of high density foam and it took me approximately six months to build; however, I was not satisfied with the result. The foam acted as insulation and got very hot very quickly and, without a helmet with an opening faceplate, it quickly became uncomfortable to wear.”

“So, ever the perfectionist, I vowed to make a better suit. The materials would be more suited to the job and I would design some of the parts myself. There are already many versions of the iron man suit available on the web, They are all free for anyone to download and require a minimal knowledge of 3D design to understand the plans and use the program Pepakura. It also requires a creative and patient mind to put it all together and make the parts fit comfortably.”

“So after much research and deliberation, I decided to attempt to build both an Iron Man Mark 20 (Mk 20 code name: Python) and a War Machine suit.”

“I chose to make the Mk20 mainly because I loved the colours. The black and gold seemed to work really well in pictures I found on the web and on the hottoys website. Elements of the suit were already available. Many people are unaware that most of the iron man suits have parts that are interchangeable e.g. the Mk20 is made up of the Mk7 and Mk17.

There are minor changes on it that make it unique but essentially, it is just these two suits amalgamated into one. The minor changes are on things like the helmet and the upper chest and neck pieces. These parts I will be attempting to make myself.”

“Both suits will be made mainly from fibreglass but will also have 3D printed parts as well as foam parts for comfort.”

“The helmet itself will be a vast improvement on my first one. While the first one was made of foam, extremely hot and wouldn’t open, the new one will open and close with the help of servos, and a micro controller mounted to the top of the helmet.”

“The eyes will turn on and off and will be made from electroluminescent panels , it will also house a tiny pinhole camera (aprox. 1cm x 1cm) and this will be connected to two tiny screens on the inside of the visor taken from a Virtual Reality visor.

“It will also have a fan inside taken from old PCs I had around the house. Cooling is a must when you are walking around in your own personal oven. I am also toying with adding a voice modulator but I’m not sure yet. Any opinions on this would be really useful to me.

“I’m also thinking of adding Bluetooth headphones or earpiece in the helmets ear pod. As Sheldon from the Big Bang Theory says, “Everything is better with Bluetooth”. This would mean you could either listen to music from your phone or use the hands free function on your Smartphone without having to take the helmet off to answer your phone. If this idea fails drastically, I can always come back to my idea to add a motorcycle helmet walkie-talkie so the Mk 20 can talk to the War Machine suit.”

“Most of this will require electronic project kits from places like Adafruit.com and Sparkfun. These kits are for people who want to make their own circuit boards and are a fun way to get into soldering components onto PCB boards. The kits come in all shapes and sizes and perform a variety of tasks from turning lights on and off and activating servos to creating GPS receivers and robots follow the links if you wish to learn more about that. As you can see from what I’ve written so far, I sure do love to challenge myself lol.”

“As for the rest of the suit, I will be adding moving flaps (flight stabilisers) to the back of both suits. They will also both have working Arc reactors (the light in the middle of the chest), 3D printed gloves, and working hand repulses (light on the palm of the hand).”

“The War Machine suit will also “hopefully” have a shoulder mounted gun that will move up, down, left, and right depending on where the person is looking. This will be controlled by an accelerometer in the helmet but more on that at a later stage in the build.”

“In the next instalment, I will cover the software I used, the design and test phase. I will also be showing you what I’ve done so far, the fibreglass and foam build process as well as my failures.”

“Comments, questions, and suggestions are also most welcome.”

The team are currently working on a strategy spaceship game and have some huge plans for the future. In Particular BearGames is looking for team members with skills in: Development, Artistry/Animation and Music.
We spoke with team leader, Daniel Bartlett, 18, from Trowbridge, Wiltshire, to find out more about his journey in games, experiences so far on Train2Game, the studio and the games they are working on.

“I realised I wanted to study game design when I would be sat in class or in my room thinking of ideas for games. And when I played games I would always be thinking ‘how could this game be better?’”

“Then one day searching through the internet to see how easy it was to become a games designer, I came across the Train2Game website. I liked what I saw so applied. A month later I had a phone call saying someone will be round to make sure this is what and then I started.”

“Studying Games Design at Train2Game is great because I study when I want and at my own pace. But when I get to a point I get stuck on, other students help me more than the tutor team does!”

“My team is called BearGames. We are currently made up of three people: me as the Games Designer, Finance, Marketing and Leader. Macaulay Tennant as the developer who I met on the 2014 fun day on Minecraft, Fabio Rodrigues as artist and animator who I recruited from the Train2Game FB page.”

“It is a combat strategy game, players will use a different strategy for each level that you will decide from either a pre-set group or one that the you created yourself. While shooting at the aliens who’s strategy will be constantly changing throughout each level.”

“For the success of our game we want to build a fan base that can help us fundraise for our next bigger game. We want to work with another studio to include voice activation in our games to make them more fun and interactive for the player.”

“We already have our next game planned and will be a much bigger project. Our long team goal is to become a well-known game studio that creates games we want and to make, games the community wants by using the ideas they have and putting some ideas together, then making games for You Tubers and other famous people in the games world.”

“My personal dream is to become the leader of a big games studio based in the UK that creates games for the community and to give a percentage of our profits to charity.”

Train2Game News Student creates Online Gaming and Development platform Plasis Games

image

Train2Game student creates gaming platform www.plasisgamesportal.com which now hosts 30 free to play games and will distribute larger titles in the future.

Train2Game student Sean Brady, 27, from Dublin, Ireland, enjoyed learning to make games and created a few titles of his own while studying with Train2Game. After searching for Distribution he was unsatisfied with the options available and decided to create his own platform for releasing titles.

He has now created Plasis Games, an independent Game Development / Publishing Studio based in Dublin, Ireland.  Initially the portal was envisioned as the central point for the game development studio and publishing platform of Plasis Games. But it has now expanded into hosting online games and plans to distribute externally created games in the future.

Plasis Games plans to provide games for both the casual and hardcore market which is why it has opened up various channels of games distribution, to bring different types of games to different types of Gamers.

Interview with Sean Brady
“I have been a gamer since I was 6 six years of age and still play games religiously to this day. My regular day job includes a combination of Technical Support and Systems/Network engineering. My main role is that of a NOC (Network Operations Center) Engineer.”

“From the very moment I started playing games like Ghouls and Ghosts and Broken Sword of the age of 6, the games provided with such joy and fun that I seeked to create more of it in the world. From my own perspective, games are the best medium for fun, interest, storytelling and expression. Nothing in my life has encompassed all my concentration to same level. They are pure bliss…”

“My dream is to enter the gaming industry in a full-time capacity and have my own development studio, online arcade and publishing house for games. I also want to integrate digital/physical media publishing for all industries as they all use the same mediums.”

Creating Plasis
“Once I achieved a level of competent Game Development, I looked for an appropriate Distributor for my games. Each publisher has its own guidelines that must be adhered too and imposed restrictions. After extensive research and by utilising my skillset in the networking domain, I knew I could create a better platform with better guidelines/features for myself and others in a similar situation.”

“The team is just myself at present. Another developer would just taint my vision. I have made the sacrifices to learn all disciplines involved to action such an endeavour. I will initiate it, implement it and finalise then there will be room for expansion with myself at the helm.”

The Platform
“I have been working on this portal, developing contacts, sourcing games and developing games internally for the studio of Plasis Games since May 2014. I have developed a number of small games internally and college projects outside the time of Plasis Games. For Plasis Games, I am still developing one 2D point and click horror adventure game and one survival horror game. The site has 30 from free flash game providers (with another 2500+ to process – not monetised) 30 from a HTML5 game development company – PlayCityInc (with 30 to process and more to source when needed – all monetised)”

“The publishing platform/online arcade has been implemented to a small degree with a collection of 60+ games added. 2500+ flash games have been collected for processing and addition; time is limited due to life circumstances. Also 30 of the games on the site at present have been provided by another partnering company called PlayCityInc or PlaytoMax. I have another 30 to upload then I can request more when necessary.”

“The website has been designed, uploaded, tested and verified. It is functionality but the user interface and graphical transitions between all pages will be revised and improved over time with significantly better art and sound. No development studio portions have been added but prototype of game levels and functionality have been created internally.”

Train2Game
“I enjoyed the course in Train2Game a lot as it provided all the fundamentals for developers to establish a base skill level before progressing. I had done art, design and programming before and the course from Train2Game was a course provided to me through an educational initiative. The quality of the content and guidance provided surprised in actuality. If you need to get started in game development, Train2Game is the first resource I would direct people too…”
