Train2Game News: UK Top 20 Games – 10.02.14

FIFA 14FIFA 14 returns to the top claiming its 10th number one crown since launch last year.  In doing so it also becomes the 11th title in an elite group to claim 10 weeks at the top on the All Formats Chart.  It’s the 3rd FIFA title to achieve the feat and also the 6th by publisher EA to feature in the list.  Activision’s Call of Duty: Ghosts returns to number two, ahead of the sole new entry in the Top 10 this week, Microsoft’s Fable: Anniversary at No3.  The title remastered in HD for Xbox 360 was first released almost 10 years ago on the original Xbox and includes The Lost Chapters content.  Its arrival also sees last week’s debutant and chart topper Tomb Raider: Definitive Edition pushed further down the chart to number four.

Train2Game News: FIFA 14 revealed

FIFA 14EA has revealed details for FIFA 14, including new features and improvements which will allow us to play “just like real footballers”, according to a press release.

Players will now have the ability to adjust their stride before taking on a shot, therefore creating a better angle, with the new ‘Pure Shot’ feature. “Well-hit balls feel more exhilarating and rewarding,” apparently, according to the press release. It continues: “Real Ball Physics now determines the trajectories of balls, enabling players to kick the ball with force from distance, drill low rising shots with accuracy, and blast dipping or turbulent shots, just like real players.”

Teammate intelligence is set to improve, meaning defenders are better able to predict the movements of oncoming strikers. ‘Sprint Dribble Turns’ and ‘Variable Dribble Touches’ will allow for tighter ball control and deft touches, and the ‘Protect the Ball’ feature will  allow players the ability to fend off pressuring defenders whilst dribbling at a range of speeds.

The last, and probably most expanded upon feature is the Global Scouting Network – an improvement on the Youth Academy Scout Network from FIFA 13. “Players now develop and refine a scouting network and search for talent year-round. Scouts can evaluate players all over the world to uncover the attributes and traits of every player in the game, in preparation for the transfer windows,” the press release reads.

FIFA 14 will deliver engaging online features and live services that connect fans to the heartbeat of the sport, and to each other, through EA SPORTS Football Club, making FIFA 14 football’s social network, where fans connect, compete and share with millions of others around the world.

The FIFA games have had a gradual evolution and a steady, yet high, popularity amongst online players. The question is though is this game going to change enough to keep it above the ever increasing popularity of PES?

FIFA 14 is in development at EA Canada and will be available in stores world-wide this fall.

Train2Game News: Icey Monty visits Yippee! Entertainment

Icey Monty and Yippee! EntertainmentThis week the guys at Icey Monty had the privilege of heading over to Yippee! Entertainment as part of a Train2Game scheme to connect students with established games makers.

Yippee! Entertainment are the creators of Chimpact, the monkey-swinging title which hit number one on the Windows Store. Veterans of the UK’s gaming industry, members of the Yippee! team have worked on games such as: FIFA, Mario Artist Paint Studio, The Simpsons and The Rugrats.

The Train2Game student studio, made up of Lee Sainsbury, Nick Walker and John Esslemont, were taken on the visit to get an insight into the Yippee! team’s experiences as a start-up studio, take a look behind the scenes at Chimpact, see the team’s latest project in development and be given advice on video game design and development.

The visit

Icey Monty sat down with Steve Ruddy, Technical Director at Yippee! Entertainment, to discuss the tech they use for their titles. The Icey Monty boys were blown away by some of the things they were shown, and it really gave them an insight into how professional studios develop tech to manage time scales and repetitive tasks, and how to use tech to really polish a game.

They then met with Kevin Green, Lead Artist at Yippee! Entertainment. Icey Monty then discussed the importance of documentation, how to decide on the best design to proceed with and how to go about creating an interesting and innovative GUI. They learnt a lot about how to make the correct design decisions and talked about making an overall enjoyable title.

Icey Monty, were asked to show a short demonstration of Tamarex, their first title for mobile which is yet to be released. It was well received by the Yippee! Team and they got some great feedback on how to improve the game.

It was a pleasure for Icey Monty to meet the Yippee! team and get to see how a professional studio operates, to see what top mobile developers are currently working on. The students are incredibly grateful and wanted to thank Yippee! for giving up their time.

Special thanks to Lorraine Starr, Commercial Director at Yippee! Entertainment, for additionally giving the team a tour of media city and making sure they were well looked after.

Train2Game News: SpecialEffect Case – Reece

Reece is 9 years old and has Cerebral Palsy. He is crazy about football, but has struggled to play with his Dad at games like FIFA using a standard controller.

We met Reece at a SpecialEffectRoadShow in Coventry where he tried out a controller which enabled him to play independently with his Dad.

Reece and his father visited the GamesRoom in April during the Easter holidays to try out some different Xbox360 controller set-ups, specifically looking at ways he could play football games. Standard controllers are too small for Reece to as he finds it hard to control his fine movements. We tried out controllers with larger joysticks he could grip more easily and larger buttons he could press more accurately.

Reece is currently borrowing a larger controller through the SpecialEffect Loan Library which enables him to have greater control over the players’ movement, kicking, tackling etc. Reece and his Dad visited the GamesRoom again mid-June to try out a more customised layout and that looks like the route we’ll take. We’re going to order some equipment to lend to him. Reece and his Dad will return to our GamesRoom for us to tweak the set-up and look at accessing other games.

Don’t forget you can help SpecialEffectby simply watching the video below and sharing it out. We can get this video to 25,000 by December 25.
