Train2Game News: Sony Virtual Reality Headset

PS4 VR HeadsetStrong speculation has risen that Sony plans to enter the virtual reality gaming space in a big way with PlayStation 4.

Multiple sources have indicated that Sony’s VR headset will work similarly to Oculus’. Internally, the device has been demonstrated with Evolution Studios’ PS4 racer DriveClub, with players able to look around the cockpit of a car.

The Liverpool studio, Evolution Studios, is home to the Worldwide Studios Stereoscopic 3D team, which has worked on 3D game development since 2008. The team, and 3D chief Mick Hocking, have been relatively quiet since PlayStation’s ill-fated 3D push in 2011.

Amid the growing popularity of the Oculus Rift VR headset among the development community and a small number of gamers it will be interesting to see how this Sony headset will stand up.

Sony’s VR headset was set to appear in some form at German show Gamescom last week, but was pulled. It is now expect it to be unveiled next year.

Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida declined to comment when asked about VR in an interview with Eurogamer at Gamescom. “We don’t talk about that,” was all he’d say. This week Sony Computer Entertainment Europe declined to comment when contacted by Eurogamer.

This is certainly one to keep an eye on.

Train2Game News: New Borderlands 2 DLC

borderlands 22K and Gearbox Software announced the release of new Borderlands 2 downloadable content on all platforms worldwide.

One new head and skin set for each playable character, as well as Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack 2: Digistruct Peak Challenge, offer a fistful of reasons for fans to continue the shooting and looting mayhem on Pandora.

“After the close of the Season Pass, we promised fans they could expect more great content for Borderlands 2,” said Randy Pitchford, President of Gearbox Software. “Gearbox has been hard at work to provide additional top-shelf offerings for the title, and both our casual and hardcore fans alike will appreciate what’s laid on the table with this wave of exciting new downloadable content.”

The Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack 2: Digistruct Peak Challenge offers 11 levels of powerful character growth, more legendary gear, and the new “Raid on Digistruct Peak” map, giving players a high-level challenge for only $4.99. When combined with the first Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack – also available separately for $4.99, or as part of the Season Pass for $29.99 – players can now take their Vault Hunters to an all-time high level of 72 and collect even more rare and valuable loot. Level 72 players will also unlock the opportunity to over-level the game as they quest for even more powerful enemies and loot in Pandora. For fans who want some vanity with a dose of insanity, one new head and skin set will be available for each Vault Hunter for $0.99 each, making all six of the playable Borderlands 2 characters more customizable than ever before.

“Fan support for the first Ultimate Vault Hunter Upgrade Pack and the many individual character customization sets continues to be an important part of the overall success of Borderlands 2,” said Christoph Hartmann, President of 2K. “With the game’s one-year anniversary on the horizon, 2K and Gearbox remain dedicated to supporting the Borderlands franchise, and will continue offering fans more of the DLC they want this holiday season and beyond.”

After a year of madness in the lands of Pandora, 2K and Gearbox are still continuing to expand the Borderlands 2 universe to bigger and greater things.

Train2Game News: Xbox One Launch Date

Xbox OneThe Microsoft Xbox One will launch in 13 markets, including the US and UK, on November 22 of this year.

The date puts Microsoft behind its rival, the PlayStation 4, in the US, but a week ahead of it in the UK. Sony has set a US launch date of November 15 and a UK launch date of November 29.

“We’re now in a position to share that Xbox One will be available on November 22, 2013 in all 13 of our initial launch markets – Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, UK, and USA. Train2Game News: Hero of Shaolin

Hero of ShaolinHero of Shaolin, an interactive movie style game for Android mobile phones, is now available worldwide on the Google Play Store and was developed by Bitmash Labs.

In the game, the player controls the movie’s main character, Tuta Shen, in a fast-paced, live-action, kung fu match. A player’s accuracy and reaction times dynamically determine the outcome of the movie. Faithful to the chop-sockey genre, the game includes mild profanity and realistic depictions of violence.

Hero of Shaolin is the first Android game based on live-action, martial arts cinema footage. During a match, the game plays a fight scene video. The player must press buttons in sync with the kung fu moves Tuta Shen performs in the movie. Otherwise, the movie transitions to one of several “You Lose” cutscenes.

Theatrical sound effects, retro kung fu music and synchronized haptic feedback add dimension to the overall chop-sockey experience. The game’s melodramatic, English-dubbed dialogues pay tongue-in-cheek homage to the kung fu films of the 1970s.

“Traditional action movies force viewers into an entirely passive role. They exclude viewers from participating in the action or being a real stakeholder in the outcome. The idea behind Hero of Shaolin is to provide the ability to step inside the movie and experience the action first-hand.” said Eric Egalite, the game’s developer.

Hero of Shaolin is now available for free download on the Google Play Store.

Train2Game News: Sony wants your suggestions

SONY_logoFollowing the success of Borderlands 2 coming to the PS Vita just because enough people wanted it to happen, Sony has announced they want to do it more often.

Head of 2K, developers of Borderlands 2, Randy Pitchford, announced his want to bring Borderlands 2 to the PS Vita but this seemed nothing more than just a pipe dream as Randy himself admitted that his studio couldn’t do it.

After this announcement talks began in Sony to make this happen. Sony spoke to Iron Galaxy, developers of Divekick and hashed out a deal to get the game ported to the hand held console with Sony publishing it.

According to Sony’s Director of Third Party Production, Gio Corsi, “The Third Party Relations team at PlayStation is well-known for developing solid relationships across this industry, and this new group will work closely with our publishing partners to bring their beloved IPs to new places… We already have a project underway, the recently announced PS Vita version of Borderlands 2.”

Corsi added “I will share more with you as our adventures continue and new games are made available,” he writes. “In the meantime, let me know in the [PS Blog] comments what you want to see on PlayStation (PS3, PS4, PS Vita). Or contact me on Twitter through the ingenious and mesmerizing handle of @giocorsi

So if there is a game you want to see ported now is a perfect time for your voice to be heard! I would personally love the full version of Shining Force 3 ported to PS Vita!

Train2Game News: Nintendo 2DS

Nintendo 2DSEarlier this week Nintendo announced a new addition to it’s hand held family. The Nintendo 2DS, the child friendly alternative to the popular 3DS.

The new Nintendo 2DS system gives you all the features of the Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo 3DS XL, minus 3D viewing and the price makes the world of Nintendo games even more accessible. The 2DS is compatible with all Nintendo 3DS and most Nintendo DS games; has wireless connectivity for multiplayer and co-op play and has access to the Nintendo eShop, with digital games, free demos, and special offers.

The 2DS has a similar design to the 3DS with the dual screens but it has no hinges. This is to help the console last in the hands of over excited children who may have trouble with the hinges of the 3DS.

It will be available in “White + Red” or “Blue + Black” from 12th October, the same day Pokémon X and Pokémon Y comes out. Nintendo of Europe doesn’t set the price of hardware in the UK, but GAME has set its price as £109.99.

Nintendo of America chief Reggie Fils-Aime said “Nintendo has one of the strongest and most diverse video game lineups in our history,

“Today we’re making those unique Nintendo experiences more accessible and affordable. However you play and whatever you play, Nintendo has you covered.”

Train2Game News: Games Industry News – 30.08.13

unity-logoIt’s the end of the week so it’s time for the games industry news round up.

Unity Technologies unveiled new 2D tools and workflow for the Unity engine and editor to meet increased demand for features designed to address the specific challenges of creating 2D games. Now in beta, the first iteration of the 2D tools, many of which are included in the free version of Unity, will be released with the Unity 4.3 update this fall. The charge to improve workflow begins with the introduction of a dedicated scene view, which includes specialized 2D scene manipulation tools. Scene view can be toggled between the traditional view or set as the default when creating a project. Importing, manipulating, and working with 2D assets are made easier with the addition of a new sprite texture importer type, automated atlasing, and dedicated 2D renderer component. Adding 2D art to a scene is as easy as dragging a sprite from the asset library into the scene where Unity will then automatically create an object. If you are a fan of 2D games and work with Unity you now have no excuses to get a game out there!

Wizards of the Coast announced that the Magic 2014 – Duels of the Planeswalkers Expansion will release on September 18, 2013. The new expansions includes; five new decks, new campaign levels, five new challenges and more persona portraits.

Starring Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows puts the focus on combat, characters, and co-op. Its swift and tactile fighting system affords players dynamic choices on the battlefield, rewarding successful combo flourishes, expert counterattacks, and brutal takedowns. The Turtles’ full range of personalities are on display throughout this original story in the TMNT universe, bringing humour and attitude to the unfolding narrative and influencing each character’s unique fighting style. The game will be released on September 25.

NEXON Europe had the pleasure to announce that global pop sensation, media personality and all-round gentleman, PSY, is appearing in the enormously successful online free-to-play games MapleStory and Combat Arms. Steve Ballmer is to retire as Microsoft CEO within the next year, the company revealed, adding credence to the rumours of a management reshuffle which accompanied Don Mattrick’s departure earlier this year. Ballmer will oversee the choice of his successor before taking retirement and remain as CEO during that process. The Microsoft board has appointed a special committee chaired by lead independent director John Thompson and including chairman of the Board Bill Gates, chairman of the Audit Committee Chuck Noski and chairman of the Compensation Committee Steve Luczo. Microsoft has said that it will be looking both internally and externally for candidates.

Train2Game News: Virgin Media Game Space

Virgin Media Game SpaceI got the pleasure of attending the launch for the Virgin Media Gaming Space last night at Blackall studios in London.

The Virgin Media Gaming Space is a new venture to promote indie gaming in the lead up to Eurogamer, where Virgin are one of the key sponsors.

The space itself is filled with many of the new indie games to try, including Spelunky and Super Hexagon. Downstairs is an area for indie developers to drop in and work together to create games with the hardware available.

There is also going to be a number of events across the time that the space is there including Game Jams and several talks with industry professionals including Mike Bithell, the developer of Thomas Was Alone.

One of the biggest attractions that is at the Virgin Media Gaming Space is the chance to try out an Oculus Rift. I jumped at the opportunity to see what it was like myself and personally was a bit disappointed but I can certainly see the potential in it.

The game that was being used to display the Oculus Rift was Strike Force Zero. A space shooter where you are a pilot destroying all things in view.

My main problem with the Oculus Rift was with me wearing glasses the headset pressed them in to the bridge of my nose causing discomfort. I did however like the way the UI would slide in to view when you looked to the left.

Regardless of my opinions on the Oculus Rift I wouldn’t have had the chance to try it out if it wasn’t for the Virgin Media Gaming Space. I urge all who can make it to visit as it is an excellent place to meet like minded individuals and play some of the latest greatest indie games.

You can read more about the space and find out about the events taking place at http://www.vmgs.com/

Train2Game News: A new SDK to make Unity games better on Facebook

unity-logoAt Unity’s developer conference, Unite, in Vancouver, BC, a new cross-platform SDK was launched that makes it faster and easier to integrate your Unity game with Facebook.

Facebook has a relevant and engaged audience of gamers that mobile developers can reach by publishing their games on Facebook, and the SDK makes bringing a mobile game to web as simple as writing one line of code. By filling out a few fields in the developer app and giving Facebook the URL of your game object, you can bring your mobile game to a whole new audience of avid gamers on Facebook.

As more graphics-rich web games come to Facebook.com, players want to stay immersed in the game experience while connecting with friends, and the SDK helps you do that. The developers have built native Unity dialogs for inviting friends, requests, and sharing, so people can stay in full-screen mode when they interact with social features, creating a richer, smoother web game experience for players.

Madfinger used the SDK to bring their mobile game Shadowgun:Deadzone to Facebook.com, opening up a new growth platform for the game with minimal effort. The number of active Facebook users with Unity installed more than tripled in the first half of 2013, and today more than 90 million monthly active users have Unity installed on the web.

You can get started connecting your gamers with their friends across platforms by downloading the SDK from the developer site or from the Unity Asset Store and reading the documentation.
